Core 2 Duo Build Project: 2007

Dang. Shaw knows lots about power. And the peripheral is WAY too expensive!!! But sounds awesome lol

Latin: I can sort-of agree with ya on waiting for the price drop. But consider that the E6600 goes from 230-250 to 150 QT3, that means my E6600 is worth about 120 shipped used, if that. As well, I don't think 250's going to be the price drop for non-native Quad Core 2's but who knows-- they dropped 40 percent this time around.

I'm thinking I'll be moving to native quad instead of faux quads anyway, so perhaps starting off with a faux Quad is okay since I have the money.

Today is the trigger day! My Decisions sit between:

Q6600 vs E6600 vs E6420

Right now the prices are:

Q6600 Complete Build (22" Gateway Monitor, FW800 Raid Setup) - 2500.00
E6600 Complete Build (22" Gateway Monitor, FW800 Raid Setup) - 2200.00
E6420 Complete Build (22" Gateway Monitor, FW800 Raid Setup) - 2150.00

Taking out the 22" Saves me 300.00 instantly, but I kinda feel like I want a second 22" to work with.

Also, I'm trying to figure out if the RAID array is necessary at the moment. 2 x 250gb 7200.10 RPM HDDs + 500gb of External Storage might be okay for a few months or until I pick up another decently paying gig (next month) to have it pay for these things.

I'm thinking I could nix the RAID for now. Any thoughts? Anyone voting against FW800 Raid setup altogether?

okay, so which would you prefer?

q6600 with 1 monitor
or
e6600 with 2 monitors
or
e6420 witth 2 monitors and a cpu fan

if you've got the money then get whatever you feel comfortable spending.

Hey UGA, nice of ya to show up. I already own one 22" gateway, so it would be a matter of purchasing another. The basic idea though is that either way I'm getting more than I would purchasing a Mac with equivalent hardware.

Which would YOU prefer and why? I'm narrowing it down between An OC'd E6600 3.5ghz Native dual until the Yorkfiled native quad comes out, or an OC'd 3.2Ghz non-native Quad until the Yorkfield comes out. The E6420 is basicallly fading away at this price point for me.

i usually base my purchases on value. to me the e6600 seems like the better value. you have to spend more than twice as much to get q6600. so i'd go with the lower priced one and overclock it. but if the $300 isn't that big of a deal to you, go with the best you can get.

"Kholi can i come over and play pong on your computer? Mine isnt powerfull enough."

The beastness of that machine makes my eyes hurt. and its like 2g's..... DAmmit... my laptop was 2g's, and its like sputtering along like a mongoloid heap.

Man I can't justify the purchase of a laptop. My old C640 could sit at 1gig of ram instead of it's lowly 512mb and I'd be happy; broken screen and all.

The forward approach to a Desktop is just much more plausible to me. The DS3 should handle the newest line of Core 2 Quad native CPUS when they drop, and I can upgrade to that and be set for another two years.

Can't say that much for a laptop. But then again, Laptop is UBER portable.

By the way. I have made my decision and I am pulling the trigger! Will update this thread with the current build and details.

what I posted on OCN

"Don't put the cooler into the equation... Get the best 775 cooler cause it is only $5 more than the one you are looking at, I don't understand how you don't see that.

@ 530 things get tougher...

$200 for an E6600 will get you a sure-thing 3.4GHz and a very possible 3.4 with possibilities of a 3.6... in 6 months you will be able to sell it foe say $150 and the Quadro will be $250... so you will have spent a total of $450... if you get it now you will spend $530 and there will be no need for a re-seating... then again you will be "stuck" with the Q6600 and will not have the option to get the QX if it were to be at your reach... many apps will still be using a single core, and the better the CPU the higher you'll be able to OC it which will give you faster single-core performance... Edius uses both cores now, Vegas doesn't (only for renders) and I haven't messed with Premier and Avid yet (don't want to get overwhelmed) but most likely they both support it for previews, definitely Avid. FCP does support it. But there will be other things which you'll use from time to time in the course of the next year that will benefit from the faster OC...

So... IMHO, I would get the Q6600 now... spend an extra $100 and $320 more up-font, but you won't have to mess with your computer any time soon... and you'll get at least a 3.2GHz OC... I am not sure if OC'ed Quads get hotter, but once again... you are making a mistake in not spending $5 more for a cooler that will get you better temps..."

So I am pushing towards the Quad... but get the second monitor FOR SURE... I can't believe you are considering getting a new compuuter like this one and still consider a single monitor setup...
Whatever you do don;t ther the E6420 cause the E6600 is tried tested and ROCKS...

Quad is my vote

Quad is definitely it. As I said on OCN (we're back and forth aren't we?) I am looking into the Yorkfield native quad later, so this is it for me.

And I already have a 22" Gateway, definitely need a second one. I'm too accustomed to using two at work at this point.

Seen that Samsung 22" 2ms response monitor on NewEgg?

Sahw thanks for telling me that the 19amps per rail is actually a 50 amp pool... yea, I was quite sure the Antec was going to do the trick, and even though I might have been able to get a slightly cheaper one I am happy to have three 12V cause I will use all of them in about 60 days when I get my GTX cause one is used by the MoBo and the GTX wants two.

ALSO!!! lol! I want a phase cooler so bad! ROFL! Now I bet Kholi will post saying I am a blue LED fan-boy now, lol, but the truth is that you'd be able to get much higher OCs out of all CPUs you installed that thing on... the cooler you get it the less voltage it requires to become stable at any given frequency... so I might have gotten a 3.6 if lucky out of my E6300... and I would be looking at a certain 3.6-3.7 or more out of my soon to be Quad possibly higher! lol....
Now THAT is a fanboy thing... lol... $1000 to get such a small improvement... lol but then again if you were loaded and were editing a budget feat then I would consider it just out of the added stability (and cause I would keep it after :D ).

2ms? lol, useless... 5ms G2G gets you more frame rate you can process in your head imo, lol
I am waiting to set up my 24" along side my 22"s and I can't wait to finally have tools in one screen timeline on the other and the preview 1:1 in the 24" but I reeeeallly need Vegas 8.0 or to work in Edius only for the 1:1 preview... also I will benefit from the Quad... but it was dolly/Quad and it was stupid to get the Quad after just recently getting the Duo, Michelle wouldn't approve... Whhhooocha! (whip)

Straight WHIPPED. Im not happy about non native Quad but it'll do.

I dunno, man. 2MS GTG sounds really fun. Especially @ 318.00 shipped.

I can do fine with another 22" gateway, but I think I'm going to start Ebay pricing 24" for the extra real-estate.

Oh yeah and I have my DVI KVM switch, so I can switch back and forth between one screen and my HDTV for previewing. :DDDD

dude... you have a 22" right? so what you need is a 1080 1:1... wait and go that route... or spend now... get the one you steered me towards... the Gateway 24"

Are you hoping to get close to 500fps on your video card? ROFL
5ms will be over-kill... I might be missing something here but I KNOW 5ms is over kill so why bother?

Dude the 22" is 5ms lol. Response time is nice to have y'know? And the 22" does 1080 1:1 as well. I'm jusst trying to decide at this moment which one to buy off'a ebay. 2x 22" sounds good enough, but the 24" has a lot more options.

And you KNOW I'm just butting heads with you on purpose on OCN, right?

well if you have a 1:1 22' then just get a 22 with at least 1050 vertical just for real estate

I guess... I just hope you'll help me out over here when I need to ask you Q's about editing and so forth :) cause I posted about 8 times trying to make sure won't get that stupid cooler for only $5 less when you'll use the cooler for any 775 CPU u get and living in the Valley I am very conscious of stability during summer after looooong hours of cutting with a deadline

Edit!! I forgot that the 24 was 1080. Looks like I'm getting a 24" LOL.

Oh yeah and... about that P5N board... guess what kinda OS you can run on it? COUGH.

yea... dude, do you read my posts? I was talking about 1080 this whole time... and someone that throws in my face at OCN that you are getting HYDRA when you are trying to save yourself from being called out by others about the cooler, well you should have been thinking 1080 all along brother... ROFL

Hey, I have no problem getting a new board a bit later, unlike you I know what I am doing when it comes to building a computer, ROFL hahah

Hey, how far is Westminister from LA? I want to come and help you when you test the HYDRA :D

To be honest I only read half of what you type. My fault. I'll correct that in the future.

No really though, I'm going to pay attention when I get out of this frantic state of "gotta have this".

I live in Los Angeles right near Santa Monica airport now. Been here for a while. Just never changed the location.

Got your info, Latin.

The NewEgg order is in!!! PAGE ONE w/ near future upgrades. Last minute modifications on the sheet.

Removed--
Wireless Keyboard (I found my black stealth wired keyboard)
PCI to PCMCIA (Realized how pointless this was since I have a laptop with two slots. And wouldn't be editing from cards so soon. Durr)
1394b Controller (Found my 1394a PCI add-on card! This'll do for now)

Changed--
nVidia GeForce 7900GS -> Radeon X1950XT by Sapphire

Added--
Windows XP Home (Opting out of XP64 due to lack of support. Vista 64 Home Basic comes later)
1 x 250gb 7200.10 Seagate HDD for a total of 3 (One more for operating system and programs only)

Total w/ 24" 1980 x 1200 Gateway FPD2485W = 2300.00 est.

Should be recieving Wednesday or Thursday. W00H
