Core 2 duo and AVCHD

Thinking about getting a new laptop once Windows 7 is released. Using Sony Vegas 9 for my NLE. Will a core 2 duo be fast enough for preview and rendering? I have a few same day edits and am hoping to not have to lug around a desktop computer. Thanks.

Wait as long as you can and get a Core i7 chip instead. It's way faster than the Core 2 Duo, especially for media applications.

Neowin recently reported that the mobile version of the i7 is coming, but I don't remember how far off it is. Probably a few months at least.

I personally would not use a Core 2 Duo. I would at the very least get a Core 2 Quad, but if I was buying a new computer it would be an i7

i7 is getting pushed out (they're starting to use a different socket than the one needed for i7's) so it looks like we might be stuck with the new i5's

i7 is not getting pushed out.

The new i5s and i7s are on a new socket, 1156, which IS different from the original i7 socket, 1366.

However neither is going away.

Socket 1366 will be for the high end, while 1156 will be for the mainstream. For i7, there is NO performance difference between the two, same speed, same performance. The only practical loss in the 1156 socket is dual channel memory rather than triple channel, and in real world apps, even cutting video, you probably won't notice the difference. So the i7 860 is actually a VERY good chip for video editing on a solidly priced platform.

That said, socket 1366 will be getting i9 soon, which is the 6 core Nehalem architecture, and that will be, for lack of a better term, poo pooing awesome.

So that's the real choice for desktop video editing hardware: 1156 is cheaper and totally solid, but 1366 will have higher end options down the line.

I, personally, have an i7 920 overclocked to 3.66 ghz w/ Hyper Threading enabled. It's absurdly fast. Got it at Micro Center for 200 bucks, which is consistantly the best price you'll find in CPUs.

Mobile i7s are still not quite here, you can get those custom job laptops like Sagers with the desktop chips in them, but they're crazy expensive and will light your pants on fire if you actually try to use them as laptops. The new ones, just announced, are 2.0ghz i7s with a much smaller thermal profile but still very expensive. Worth it if you NEED to cut video on the go.
