copyright question

Mino, since you can play, why don't you write your own original material so you anit got to worry about all this copyright BS!

Cool....Thanks! Do you have any idea on the cost percentage vs copyrighted recording by actual band...If that makes sense

Using the original band's performance can range from 0 to more-than-you-want-to-pay.

Doing it yourself should be a pittance. Check with ASCAP/BMI (depending) and see what the fee is.

There was a band around here that put a cover tune on one of their albums. All they needed was permission from the artist and they paid a small fee for every CD that was manufactured. It was in the neighborhood of $0.07 per disc. I'm not sure if it applies to this situation though.

In my world, if I had one, There would be a deal that said use all and any music you like. If you don't make money you don't pay. If you do make money, you pay a percent.....Makes sense to me!

Mino, talk to a Canadian lawyer about "compulsory license."

Unfortunately, when it comes to Sync rights (I'm assuming international here...) there is NO such thing as compulsory license. That is for mechanical replication only... statutory and compulsory... set fee and a must grant. No such luck with synch rights.

also, correct me if im wrong (but i dont think i am) artist can only copyright lyrics and melody, not chord progression.

Be like everyone else and take the song u like and change a few notes in the melody. then u dont have to worry about any laws and depending on how much u change u can even take credit for writing it yourself!

Well, that's the thing. I wouldn't assume international. I know the US Code; I don't know the Canadian code, but I do know there are enough difference to think it might be worth asking about.
