Copying just video to the timeline?

Sorry if this has been covered, but i searched this site and google and found no answers. :(

I've added a clip (a tap being turned on) with sound to the timeline.

I want to add a cutaway to track 2 over the tap, so that i keep the sound of the original.

How do i select just the video to copy to the timeline? I've been locking all the audio tracks before i copy the track over, which isn't very efficient.

Please help!

if you option-mouseclick, it selects only what you click, be it the video alone or the audio alone, or you can add the new video into a higher track, or unlink the video and the audio.

unlink is modify menu => link, (command L)

You can also set your target tracks... assign video to layer 2 and deactivate any audio targets. Then drag your clip to the target video track and the audio will not drop into the time line.

Dont even necessarily have to target your video if your dragging. Leaving it target to V1 and unlink the audio targets will let you drag it anywhere.

So can i copy just video or just audio from the viewer to the timeline by option mouse clicking?

depends on where your copying it from.
From the viewer: unlink all audio and just regular drag from the viewer.
inside time line: you can select just the video if it is linked to audio tracks by option clicking the video track then moving. If you don't let go of option while you move it, it will duplicate the clip. Very useful for fast editing. Note: if you option click and don't let go of option when duplicating a clip it will do an insert edit when you drop it. By option click and holding -> move the clip-> let go of option and it will do a overwrite edit instead.

That's kinda a lot of blab. Let me know if you don't get it still.

if you have 2 channel audio and only two audio tracks in the timeline, add 2 more audio tracks, normally i set the preferences to 4 channels when working with 2 channel audio, when you drag on the time line you will see when your mouse is over the video tracks that the sound is going for audio 3 & 4 normally, drop it then option-mouseclick the audio and delete.

file menu => user preferences =>timeline options, 1 video track 4 audio tracks on the upper left side.

when creating new video tracks by dropping, the audio goes the the last audio tracks, it does not create new audio tracks, it's a glitch it only happens if you only had two audio tracks, once you had more it goes away, even if you delete the extra audio tracks, when you drag a video with audio, it adds new audio tracks.

Thanks!

So i need to unlink all audio and then i can just drag video from the viewer down to the timeline instead of deleting audio once it's on the timeline?

How do i unlink audio again? Command + L?
