Copying card contents to PC

After a shoot I have about 8 cards which need to be copied to the PC in order to liberate the cards for the next shoot. I have 3 card adapters which I use to copy 3 cards at a time. The cards are labelled with a sticker but once the adapter is on the PC it is just shown as 'removable drive' and it can get confusing which card is where.

Is there a way to label the card electronically after formating in camera?

As a more safe way of copying, I looked at Shotput Pro (which is now Windows 7 32 & 64 bit) compatible but it doesnt solve the problem of which card is which.

I could just copy one card at a time to be sure but its not very efficient.

Thanks

The best fix for this is to format the cards on the PC and give them unique names. There should be no difference between a PC and 150 format.

Otherwise.. ya.. file management with the 150 is a real pain in da butt.

How do you deal with the fact you have 8 cards which contain basically the same file names as everyone else ?
I've been wishing since the day I got this for an in-camera file name manager, the most ideal would be YYMMDD_HHMMSS.MTS . That way every file name is unique and is presented in chronological order. I use an app on the NLE when I copy the camera files to batch-rename things, still pisses me off. Eats into my time.

Do not format the cards on a PC unless you are using Panasonics SD card formatting software or you will have trouble.

The USB system uses a finite bandwidth. As you add more demand, the bandwidth is divided equally between devices. Of course, if cards or readers are slower than available bandwidth of the USB interface and hard drive, more readers = faster data transfer.

8 cards is a lot if they are 16GB or higher and nearly full, that's for sure. But I would still do them one at a time if the material is important.

Have you noticed some readers or cards download faster than others? I have a couple cheaper cards that offload lots faster than my expensive Sandisk Extreme cards.

Just make separate folders for each card, such as Cam1 Chip1, etc. Do them one at a time to minimize confusion.

Yeah, folders are your friends. Create a folder that's the name of the project, then within that project folder do as sewolla says - a folder for each card by number.

I believe the naming convention is based off the AVCHD / Blu-ray spec which mandates these 5-digit file names. I *think*.

As you have found out, the AVCHD format is a stupid acquisition format. Panasonic dropped the ball on this and just went with what was already available. Unfortunately, that format was designed for playback only.

Given the name collision issue, the best way I've found was to gather all of the MTS files into the same folder. I'm using Photo Mechanic to digest the cards and it performs name changes automatically on the fly. Once that's done, use a file rename utility and rename the files in sequential order arranged by the original modify/create date of the file. This way, I end up with files that can be sorted in sequentially via filename, in the order they were created.

Actually, even if you format with the panny formatter, you still need to format IN CAMERA before shooting onto your card. Sorry for the caps, but this can not be stressed enough.

Maybe it wasn't enough caps - ALWAYS FORMAT IN THE CAMERA

I bet we would have a lot less 'lost clips now what' threads.... :Drogar-Shock(DBG):
