How does one make a copy of a tape shot at 24p or 24p Adv. ?
Cam to DV deck? Cam to Cam What?

Re: Copy a tape shot in 24p.

I'm led to believe that the miniDV tape always has 30fps(29.97) recorded on it, no matter what the camera was shooting, 60i, 30p, 24p 24pa, etc. The pulldown takes care of this prior to the frames/fields getting laid down on the tape.
I was just a little slow for this to sink in.
The next step, say Vegas4, capturing and editing in the 24p or 24pa format, maintains the pulldown frame relationships so that when going back out the cine converter (sic) will do the pull up correctly. Is this right???
Even if the footage is shot in 24p, There is no reason to stay in 24p mode in Vegas unless the project is going out to film or 24 fps DVD right?

Correct, NTSC is 60i and only 60i (in standard def). Mini-DV only records 60i, it's the pulldown that allows 24p to fit into a 60i medium.

Yes, if I understand what you're asking. In Vegas, during capture the pulldown is not removed, so it still lives out in the .AVI. But, when editing in Vegas, Vegas removes the pulldown when in the timeline so you can work with it natively. It doesn't affect the underlining file, but just knows how to interpret it.

Yes, don't forget the web, also another reason to stay 24p if you want it that way. And, if you don't want to edit 24p but want 24p then shoot Normal instead of Advanced so you don't have to mess with pulldown conversions and what not.

Well, not really... editing in a 24P timeline is appropriate for the following destinations:
1) xfer to film
2) 24P DVD
3) PAL transfer
4) if you want a 24fps streaming/internet video
5) if you want a file to distribute on .AVI or .MOV on a CD-ROM

Also, if you're integrating computer graphics or doing rotoscoping or other frame-by-frame special effects, you can get much nicer results by staying in the 24-frame timeline (as well as cutting your workload by 20%).

Re: Copy a tape shot in 24p.

Hello
2 questions: Why have I to use 24pA to transfer later to PAL?? (how the transfer works better than 24 p or 30p)

and how :digital cut" works on avid xpress pro?? I had no problem on regular project but never could transfer 24 proyect to a tape as the digital cut refuses to be activatted. Thanks and happy new Year . Jose

Re: Copy a tape shot in 24p.

You need an Avid Mojo to output to DV over FireWire. Using NORMAL or ADVANCED has nothing to do with your desitination - BOTH can go to PAL, FIlm, DVD, NTSC etc, it is all up to the NLE and how it captures the frames to begin with. I have been going to PAL, NTSC, FIlm, DVD etc. way before ADVANCED pulldown was available. There is so much confusion over this issue when there does not need to be. ADVANCED pulldown only exists so that 24p native capture can be done over FireWire without going through a decomoress/recompress stage when working in DV native 25Mbs. THAT's IT!
