Coollights LED 600 Ideas

Since I am a professional lighting guy at a local lighting and production company I get to see, demo, and use many different products from many different manufacturers. While not all of the products are that great, I do get to see what various features of certain lights work and what ones don't. Our company doesn't go into much when it comes to LED video lighting so I have begun building my own personal inventory. Since my budget is much less I don't have the option of getting high end LEDs like Cinemills or Mole Richardson, maybe someday. I recently picked up a CL LED600 to play around with and see how I liked it. Overall I like the fixture and I have come up with a few things that I would like to modify or add to the light. I know Richard stated at NAB he was working on a new version so here are some things that got me thinking.

1 - An open gel frame. The plastic filters are nice but not really stackable in the holders. When you have the barndoor in there is only room for one filter. I could really use a standard gel frame so I can put together my own combination of color and put it in there.
1B - Deeper gel frame ears. There really isn't much room for anything when you have the barndoor or softbox ring on.

2 - A remote dimmer switch. I am actually about to open the fixture up to see if there is anyway I can remove the dimmer switch and put it in its own box. I would then add a connector (XLR or LEMO) to the bottom of the fixture so I could have the dimmer at the ground when the light is up on a stand.

3 - A more balanced yoke. I would love to see a yoke added to the middle of the head so when you tilt the head it stays balanced over the attachment point.

So those are my ideas. I figured the gel frame and the remote dimmer would be easy adds and I would love to do to the fixture that I have. I curious if anyone else has any thoughts or ideas as well.

Ben, thanks for your comments. Some of those things may very well be in the new design. Can't comment on details at this time though.

Another small request would be to use heavier insulation on the 4 pin XLR cable between the light and power supply. I know the wire itself doesn't carry much load, but the wire is light enough that it might not hold up to the wear and tear of road use.

I have the same gripe with Bescor bricks xlr output cables.
