The reason i say kind of is that they're not really all too instructional. pretty much for entertainment purposes only. but anyways, i just finished editing these, and thought i would post them up. for anyone who saw my twilight zone thing, these are much brighter and a lot easier to see. :D

also, these are pretty music oriented and contain music from samurai champloo and cowboy bebop.

update: i just finished volume 3, check it out if you want to :)

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

yeah, uh, rice is a little burnt. 3 cups of rice requires an inch of water. That was fun. I like the editing, not bad.

Got Rice? ;D

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

hey, thanks ;D thats what i get for not cleaning the rice cooker

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

Dude, ahahah, that's what I forgot to mention. You started making that rice without cleaning all that junk in it. I started laughing at that. If my grandma would of seen that, you be in trouble Mr!! Too funny man.

Neosnare,

I really enjoyed these (I love cooking)... Very creative and watchable...nice sense of humor running throughout.

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

I agree Dis -

You made something mundane very watchable and that is the trick afterall!

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

I love the shot in the 2nd one where the pot comes off the stove and is put on the counter.. nice and wide ;D

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

hey, thanks everybody. these are a lot of fun to make so i'll probably be doing some more in the next week or so.

BLUESPIDER - yeah, my grandma, who gave me with the rice and furikake, probably wouldn't approve of that either, lol. i'm supposed to wash the rice first too and stuff, but my lazyness prevents me from doing it. :D

lincolnlog - it's funny, i just sent the video to my mom and she commented on that too. lol. thats the one scripted scene in the whole thing. i just saw some wes anderson movies a few days ago, and they tend to make me want to use the full wide shots. ;D

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

where did you get the 24 sound effect??

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

jg2000 - i got the 24 sound effect off of one of the dvds. i just played it on my computer and recorded the sound with a wave recorder. nero wave editor i believe. that was the fastest way to get it as far as i could tell.

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

I like your 2-pop graphics. And the music was perfect to both pieces.

1st piece:

This is a pretty tight short. I thought the beginning was a little loose, in comparison to the tight editing in the rest of the short.

Besides some minor tightening I thought a little color timing and a little more sound mixing would make this piece really pop. It's already pretty strong as it is. Nice work.

2nd:

Editing is tight. Ditto my comment about color timing. I like the style in both pieces. I just realized I watched someone make dinner, and I liked it. You win.

Isaac Brody - i'm glad you like it. :) i definitely agree about the beginning of the first one. i may try to tighten it up a bit. also, this may be a stupid question, but what exactly is color timing?

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

Color timing is the process of matching shots(exposure and contrast) and giving your film a specific look in post production. I think the term is actually color grading/correction in the digital realm. I believe color timing primarily refers to the printing process of film where you print the negative based on three lights (RGB) to get your desired look. I may be mixing up the terms but I think that covers the gist of it. (If I'm wrong someone please correct me.)

After cutting your short together the basic goal is to make sure your shots match colorwise. If you had three shots and one of them was a little underexposed you'd color correct the darkly exposed shot to match the other ones. Of course maybe you're goal isn't to match shots but to make them seem drastically different in exposure, contrast, and color. That might be a conscious choice as welll.

My comment about color correction on your shots was because I thought the color looked a little flat. I wasn't sure if that was intentional or not.

In your NLE (Final Cut, Premiere, etc) you'd use a color corrector effect and play with gamma, curves, and other settings to get the desired look you want. Another route is to use Magic Bullet, software which has a number of interesting looks and is relatively easy to use for people with no experience in color correction. Just look at the posts floating around in this section for an example of Magic Bullet and color correction. Hope that helps.

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

Cool. Not only did I watch you cook rice all the way to the end, but I watched Volume II also. The creative use of editing, titles, and music, very easily held my attention. Good work.

I feel silly critiquing a little fun bit like this, but there was one thing that bugged me. On the zooms a lot of times you lost focus. It didn't look intentional but I may be wrong. If you don't already know, zoom all the way in on the subject/object, focus, then pull out and start your shot. I'm guessing it just wasn't that big a deal since you were just messing around. It just caught my attention because the rest of it looked so clean.

My favorite thing about this is that it proves ALL of us can be constantly shooting and editing. Exercises like this one are great practice. It doesn't matter if you have to dramatically light your 3 year old eating or cut together a scene of your car pulling out of the garage. Just keep shooting. :D

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

haha!!! I like in the second one, on the materials/ingredients list, #3 was ? and #7 was "thing" :)

#3 is pasta spoon (or fork)
#7 is a colander

Just for if you really dont know. :D Very funny... I like the titles, too. "Cooking with Hands" ;D

aw man - great stuff! how fun! i LOVE the second one (i'm a big fan of 24, so maybe i'm playing favorites)

i helped a friend do an audition tape for a cooking show for the food network. we werent allowed to use any music for legal reasons, but now i am so jealous. this is too cool.

our attempt at a cooking video if you'd like to see...

That was nice Ant...you made him look fun and confident. Good job!

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

Re: Instructional Cooking Shorts - Kind of

thanks everyone for your comments!

Isaac Brody - thanks for defining that for me. i actually used the "bistro" magic bullet preset on these but i didn't think to color correct individual scenes. i just threw the preset over the whole short. i pretty much just wanted these shorts to be really bright, but i'll have to see if i can give them some more depth as well. thanks for the advice!

i'll probably play around with the gamma, color curves, etc. to see what i can do and to give myself some experience. when it comes to that kind of stuff i have no idea what i'm doing. lol. not the slightest clue.

ExFilms - i assume you're talking mostly about the volume II for the out of focus stuff? it's not really intentional, although i kind of like how it's out of focus in a few shots. i think it's mainly because that was my girlfriend cooking and she didn't really stop or slow down to let me get the shots. lol, i pretty much had to just get what i could. the first one was a lot more planned out since it was me making the rice. next time if she's cooking i'll see if she'll slow down a little so i can have time to do the zoom in focus technique. :)

thartley - lol ;D i had no idea what the real name for that spoon was, so i just left it at ???. i kind of knew that bowl was a colander, but i didn't know how to spell it so i figured "thing" would suffice. lol. so now i know their official names :D

greeches - thanks! i'm glad you liked it :D

antOmic - that guy looks like he's a great cook. that soup looked really good! makes me hungry. lol. so your video did it's job well!! oh yeah, and 24 is imo the best show on tv!
