FS7: Converting to ProRes?!?!

hi all,

I need to convert the FS7 footage to ProRes...suggested methods please?

I know DaVinci Resolve is one option.
Any other free options?

Thanks

After inhabiting Panasonicland for so long, crossing into Sony World has not been without its discomforts. The camera is utterly cool, even if the menu system is complex. Now that I'm ready to bring some files into FCP7, I'm having difficulties. First, even after downloading Apple's upgrade that supposedly permits FCP7 to play with Sony MXF files, I get a message from FCP it doesn't recognize the root folder or structure. And, in the Log and Transfer preferences, I see nothing related to Sony or MXF. Lastly, even if I try to transcode the MXF files in Catalyst Browse, I get a message that it "failed to render" the file. So, nada on all counts. Any words of wisdom in what to do? No, I'm not going back to Panasonicland.

you can transcode for free using Davinci Resolve LITE as mentioned above. As for Catalyst Browse make sure you have the newest version of Catalyst Browse (v1.1 I believe released around Dec 19th) but if you want to try the supposed plugin log/transfer function maybe check out this thread where at least one use reported it worked for him;

You can also use FCP 10 to transcode to ProRes.. a trial version will work. :)

Thanks, Dennis. We're mid-project and committed to FCP7, so you can understand our excitement when Apple announced support for the Sony files in FCP7. It probably works, just have to figure out what the snafu is in our system. I believe Alister suggested you needed v.7 of QT Player, and we're on v.10. Just doesn't make sense to me that Apple would develop anything, even for something beyond its supported life as FCP7, that needed a legacy component. But, I'll check out the link you provided.
On the other hand, I only downloaded Catalyst about a week or so ago, so I'm pretty sure I'm using the latest version. Maybe as I cross check, I'll try to transcode the files in Resolve.
Best.

I'm having the same problem as David in not getting MXF and XAVC file to open in quicktime 7 or FCP7 (I have latest software and am on 10.9.5.) My wife's laptop will do it with the same OS and software so I imagine there is some kind of conflict but I can't find it.

Nevertheless - I have no problem transcoding to Prores out of Catalyst browse. David , you can call me if you want to walk through it. It took me a few minutes to find it.

Howewver in UHD I can't seem to batch transcode from Catalyst Browse. Is that normal.

So the Borosoft XML file converter utility that the link leads to, doesn't recognize my XML, or MXF, files. Go figure.

One thing that gets complicated about the FS7 is that it has both XDCAM 50Mbps 422 codec and XAVC-I, and XAVC-L. Software support for each of these codecs has varied.

If you're shooting XDCAM 422 50Mbps, support should be pretty good. Sony Content Browser works great for exporting and rewrapping these files as .mov files that play nice with Final Cut 7. Sony Catalyst Browse should be able to batch transcode the XAVC files to ProRes for you. DaVinci is certainly another option.

Thanks to Lenny, the simple trick to getting Catalyst to do its thing is where it says, "Transcode" in the "View" mode, don't believe it. You have to go under the "Browse" mode and then at the bottom of the window under "File" you can choose "Transcode To." At which point you have to select your DESTINATION folder. It's less intuitive than it could be, but it does work. Thanks, Lenny.
