Converting to Black and White tricks ?

hi all,

was wondering if there are any tricks for converting DV footage to black and white. Beacuse of the colour compression a straight desaturate as a post process precipitates so much compression artefacts ! Is there a clever way of doing this, say by using a channel mixer or something, so that you get less blocky effects and nasty compression.

You might also want to experiment with channel mixing if you have After Effects. Gives you great control over the final look.
 
do you think that maybe lowering the chroma saturation in my scene settings has caused even more corruption when i try to go b&w ?
