converting to avi?

Have a shoot scheduled this weekend but the client wants the files on the day so he can import them to Pinacle studio and edit them overnight.

The problem that I see is that first will need to copy the files from the P2 card to a windows laptop with PCMCIA card, then copy the files from the laptop to a hard drive (via USB...), connect the hard drive to a a mac, convert the files, then put them on a different hard drive for the client....

so all of that sounds like its going to be sitting beside my laptop in the field for 2 or 3 hours...

sooo... my questions are:

- Is there any way to convert files from P2 card on a pc? I have premiere CS2 on my laptop but last time I checked CS2 doesnt recognise HPX170 files (unless its CS3 or CS4)

- Any software on a mac that recognizes converts P2 files? And if so what file settings should I use when converting? (only way I can think of is to log and transfer all the footage to FCP and hope there are some nice export settings...)

:undecided

Can the client bring their laptop with pinical on it? The easiest way to do this would be to do a live digitize into pinical via fire wire. back up with p2 ofcourse. Do you have a windows laptop? If so you can download pinicals free trial and then you just have to copy the files to a drive for the client. Pinical 10 ( the one i used to use) does not recognize p2 files. If you digitize direct ti pinicale it will use uncompressed avi or mpeg2. (in ver 10)

Thanks for the reply, just put the trial version on dowload now. Not quite sure on how to do a live digitize directly to pinnacle though. Is this a feature thats included in the Pinnacle studio?

I hope you're shooting in DV. Pinnacle Studio does not have the codecs to recognize HD (and I'm not even sure about DVCPro25)/

I assumed you were shooting SD but i thought the newest pinnacle ver could do HD.

The live digitize in ver 10 was pretty easy and is included in studio. Hook up fire wire from cam to laptop. open pinical and click on the capture tab (again in ver 12 may be a little different). it feels like your comp just about crashes then shows the preview screen of you cam. You set either mpeg2 or dv and then hit record. Try it a head of time and see if you can record dv with no dropped frames. My old laptop couldn't so i used mpeg2. it will put the files someware (you can select where). next just copy and paste.

just read the spec on the new ver...so many formats..and yes it is hd compatible. Might want to checkt he ver you client has to make sure you dotn go over board. Sticking with sd mpeg or dv should be compatible with all versions.
