Converting the P2 2 GIG card into a gateway to a external Hard Drive...

Hi Team......

I'm putting out a challange.......

I've been looking high and low for a way to make a cheaper option for recording HD....

Through my travels I have ponded on ideas and ways ( without opening the HVX up ) to make a cheap option for HD recording....

I have come up with hopefully what I beleave to be a great idea.... But will it work?

You can buy a P2 2 GIG card from ebay for under $100 AUD ( around $60 USD )

I'd like to know if someone tech enough would know is it possible by opening the P2 2 gig card and wiring up a plug to an extrernaly self powered HDD...
Thus using the P2 2 GIG card as a gate way to a self powered portable HDD...

So get the soldering irons out, put on a white coat and lets see if it can be done... If so the person who does ( i'm sure ) will be praised on these boards like a dam KING........

:cheesy:

I don't believe 2gb P2 cards are compatible with the HVX, at least from what I read on Panasonic's website.

As for your idea in general, keep in mind that there is more to a P2 card than just storage. It is an actual "computer" of sorts, complete with firmware, etc.

While it might be possible to trick the card into thinking a hard drive is attached instead of the SD cards, how would you go about tricking the firmware into knowing the correct size of the drive? Even if it was physically possible to rig something like this, my guess would be it would only record up the the original capacity of the P2 card...

However, a thought just occured to me -- could you force the firmware for the 8gb card onto a 4gb one? If so, you could swap out the SD cards yourself for higher capacity ones, and create an 8gb card from a 4gb one...

My guess is that it wouldn't work, however...

Just buy the p2 cards, trust me theyre worth it. All the time you spent scheming to try to replace them, you could be earning money to buy one. I buy p2 cards instead of food and mortgage payments sometimes

A 4Gig card only has 4Gigs of physical memory space, you can't trick it into being an 8Gig card.

What you're actually proposing is the CinePorter.

I use the FS-100, love it.

P2 cards are the BOMB.

No matter what, your footage is secure. ive had my computer crash while off loading them. pulled teh card, checked the footage in camera, it was fine, rebooted, and kept on a truckin. they are nice.

Thats a funny comment, however I work for a bank in Australia and you would be supprised how many people think like this....
Its ok if you like to live in a card board box and eat at food shelters lol....

It's just an idea guys and girl..... anythings possible... Ill be traveling to the states in march this year and will buy a P2 card ( 4 gb ) for my hvx and begin my first ever short film......
Why buy a P2 card from the states you say.... In australia Panasonic likes to rip its customers off thats why panasonic isn't too big here. It costs around $715 australian dollars from the states while in australia it costs over $1000 aud.... They take $300 for there own coffers.... its a scam so i guess you can see why im looking into other methods...

cheers
