Converting AVCHD to DNxHD

That's great. They have a "Video Noise Reduction" filter, but actually, it is their "Sharpen" filter containing Gaussian Noise Reduction + other goodies that has me interested.

The people at Squeeze are accessible and forthcoming with unexpected details on how the submenu options work.

Robert, I hope to check it out someday. Is there a Vdub for dummies site that gets someone without an engineering degree up and rolling with, say the Russian filter?

I don't think VirtualDub is really that tough to get started using. It really just takes the patience to sit and explore it a bit, learn how the menus work, etc., rather than any really advanced education. Of course, by nature, some of the abilities it gives you do require understanding the pertinent concepts (like changing output color space format, for example) - and some of the abilities are fairly advanced. You can get started reasonably quickly, but it will also take quite a while to fully master everything you can possibly do (if you should want to).

Basically, you open a file, and apply filters to your video clip, via "Video" > "Filters..." (from the main menu bar at top). Note that the MSU denoising filter is a third party filter that you need to download separately and install (which is simple - just copy the *.vdf file into the Virtual Dub plugins folder - and VDub will "see it" next time it is started).

Robert, I have Vdub on my system, along with MSU denoiser. Is there a golden rule about the order the filters are placed?

Some filters only work on progressive footage. So you have to be sure to put the deinterlace above them if you need one. Otherwise, it's common sense. If you are applying color changing effects, then make sure you have corrected exposure above that, etc. Nothing too fancy. And most have a preview, so you can see what's going on.

What I've been trying lately, is applying the MSU denoiser first (light spatially, moderate temporally), with 1080p24 HDV footage shot with an HV20, and then downsizing to 720p (Lanczos), and lightly sharpen, before exporting uncompressed to do an H264 encoding with x264. I can't see any difference in the 720p image coming out of VDub (with or without the denoising), but SSIM scores, after the H264 encoding, are a little bit better (small but not insignificantly tiny) and the final encodes do seem to usually come out just slightly better looking to the eye (just a tad crisper on the whole).

For anyone using x264 who might be interested, I've been testing the uneven multi-hex me search vs the (way slower) exaustive search, watching the SSIM scores, and quite consistently, the difference is just not close to significant (nor can I perceive any difference at all visually), at least with the material I've been experimenting with lately (mostly clips of my puppy playing).

ummmm....?

ummmm....?

Cheers for this help; but a critical part is not working for me.

** I'm just starting off using Avanti/ffmpeg. ** I'm no fool, but I am new to this.

I went through the various steps, all very clear and understandable.

However, when I click on Process, Avanti coughs up this error message:
Untitled-1.jpg

This is the preview window:
Untitled-1a.jpg

My .avs file has this line:
DirectShowSource("00024.MTS", fps=59.94, convertfps=true)

This is an exact copy of the suggest command line, with the appropriate changes- so why is Avanti being snotty about it? :(

Any help appreciated!

Headlock - install haali media splitter, and ffdshow (enable h.264 in the ffdshow configuration, set to "ffmpeg-mt")

Also, is your .avs file in the same directory as your .mts file? If not, you have to specify the directory in your script

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.....

Thanks!

Will do and see.
