Converting a duffle bag into a divided case.

I need a misc. gear bag that doesn't cost 500 dollars, and I am thinking of converting an old dufflebag into one. I am thinking of making velcro compartments for mounts, battery chargers, a place for extension cables, XLR, etc. I have an idea that I can get all of these things at a Micheal's or a craft store. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? It also needs to carry my laptop.

I've thought about this as well, not sure if it would save a whole lot of money in the long run though. But if you could sew on a machine (i've been messing around with a sewing machine learning a bit), you could definately make it. But buying decent materials, velcro, and making stiff, yet soft dividers. You may spend a little more than you may be thinking. I'd like to see what you come up with and what the cost was though.

I'm prepared to spend some money on it, as long as it doesnt equal to the cost of the ones I've seen online. They are way to pricey, even if I had the money I can't see myself spending 600 dollars on a bag. I understand I'm in a very expensive field, but come on! I am just trying to not spend or have to save for a bag in which to carry mounts and stuff, and no one seems to know of anything. I don't want to spend more than 100 dollars on it. I will be going to Micheal's today to looks around. I will let you know.

I agree that you need to go with good velcro and that this might cost a little money. For the fabric and stiffener, though, there is no reason it should cost you much -- if anything. Scrounge. What you are looking for is a decent exterior fabric and then something a bit stiffer for the core. You could find a couple old canvas duffels and cut them into strips for the core material. Wrap around the stuff from an old ski jacket, perhaps. All of this stuff should be either picked up for free or for a couple bucks from the charity shop. Either sew it yourself or get a seamstress to do it for you -- you would be surprised how cheap some professional help can be in this case for what is, after all, a simple project.

Cheers,
Dave
