Conversion from 601 to 24p.

Just read a guide on 24p and Panny DVX 100 in Vegas 4.0 and DVD Architect. It is very interesting and relevant to my current project. I will be recording a live concert using (2) different cameras. Sony's TRV 900 will be used for center shots and DVX 100a for audience reaction and stage shots of the band in 24p. Since Vegas permits conversion of 60i to 24p, I am contemplating using this process on the TRV 900 footage and mixing it with DVX footage for a 24p DVD (NTSC). My concern is quality of finished product. Any feedback or suggestions from users who implemented similar process is very much appreciated.

Vegas does pretty good in the conversion, but I have been hearing some good things about the new version of DV film maker, you can even download a trial version of it to test out the footage conversion.

My first advice would be, test it first. Don't just show up to the gig with this plan in mind, and then shoot it, and then find out in post that you don't like the look...

Second, if mixing those cameras, and intending to use software conversion on the 900, you might consider shooting the DVX in 60i mode as well and converting its footage. Sounds silly, I know, but I'm guessing (and it's only a guess) that a TRV900/60i will match better with a DVX/60i than a TRV/60i->24P clip would match with a DVX/24P clip.

Just a guess. Test it first, and if possible, try to have the cameras shooting radically different image sizes (i.e., have the DVX shooting a wide cover shot, and the TRV's shooting closeups). That'd go a long way towards covering up any mismatch.

Re: Conversion from 601 to 24p.

First of all, just know that any conversion from interlaced (60i) to progressive (24p) will result in some loss in resolution. Just how much of a loss in resolution depends on what tool you use to deinterlace the footage. Vegas deinterlaces just like any other NLE (effectively cutting resolution in half). There are some other tools for deinterlacing footage, such as DVFilm Maker and Re:VisionFX's FieldsKit (an After Effects plugin), that claim to analyse the motion of an image to selectively deinterlaced areas of the frame that require it. I have had experience with FieldsKit and it works as advertised, but I have not tested DVFilm Maker to any great extent yet.

I'm assuming that you know that you could edit both the 60i footage and 24pN footage on the same timeline in vegas, so I'm guessing that you're wanting to convert your 60i footage for the "look" of the footage rather than the actual 24p frame rate. In such a case, any of these tools will work well. But as suggested already, test first to find the best solution for your application.
