Convergent Design Support

A comment about Convergent Designs support for the record. As background, the software company (Matrix Software) I founded has been going almost forty years and is the second oldest software company on the Internet according to an article written for Red Herring Magazine. The only older company is Microsoft.

So I have been supporting software for a long time and know something about it. When I had some questions about the Odyssey 7Q, I called Convergent Design's support line and was surprised when the voice on the other side said "Hello, this is Dan Keaton."

Like so many of us, I had been following Dan Keaton's updates here on DVXuser until Mitch took over, so I was amazed that Keaton would actually be on the other end of the line. Keaton quickly figured out my problem and I was back to the shoot. But I had further questions the next day, so I called back.

This time I got Keaton who was on the convention floor with the Convergent Design booth at NAB 2014. It was loud in there, so instead of asking me to call back next week or something, Keaton insisted on going outside to his car and talked with me from there. Now this was a little amazing to me, because I have worked many shows myself, and usually I would not leave the convention, etc.

And so it goes. I have now logged a number of calls and each time was impressed by the time and care Keaton (and his whole team) took to answer my questions and address any problems that I was having. In my experience, this kind of support is unusual, to say the least. It is worth mentioning.

I am now using my FS700 and Odyssey 7Q much of the time and the 7Q (as most of us here know) has taken this camera to a whole other level. I am shooting mostly now in 4K RAW to HD Apple ProRes 422 and just love the results. Many of us (myself included) have given the Convergent Design folks a bit of a rough time because we needed this product for our work in a hurry. I just wanted to point out what a professional team they have and to formally thank Dan Keaton for his approach.

Perfect timing for me to chime in as well. I just got my FS700 upgraded, and today was my first day with the 7Q.

Now, i'm just a guy who creates online videos for fun. I consider it my job, but i'm self taught. I'm honestly not sure i would have bought in to the eventual 4k upgrade with the FS700, because it's pretty high level stuff and i would have considered it out of my league. But Dan and Mitch were here to answer every little question someone had. I feel they went above and beyond to keep in contact with us. The journey of the 7Q became a really interesting story of it's own. Feeling that the people at CD were so cool about it, i eventually decided to order one.

So, my story is that i decided to dive in deeper. To get the 7Q, and work with RAW or ProRes i felt i should expand my knowledge of film making in general. I got in to a couple great books about lighting. I found myself reading all about RAW footage, grading, bit rates. Watched and read all i could about things like framing, lens focal lengths and compression. A lot of this, i didn't know a few months ago.

And now today i'm sitting here with a camera i feel i could literally create anything with. A feature length film for the big screen, who knows. It's very exciting.

So thanks Dan and Mitch, and a lot of the users on this forum, for all the help and inspiration!

Yeah, Dan is top notch in my book. His dedication to helping the customer is just unbelievable and he's so dang nice as well.

Dan and Mitch are A+ in my book, especially for all the freak outs (myself included) that they have to deal with.

There is a lot of heart that makes up Convergent Design. I met many of them at NAB and it was very clear that they do what they do because they WANT to. It's not just a job because all of them could have any number of jobs. They invent which is a creative endeavor that is ultimately achieved by considerable technical prowess. This is becoming more rare in our industry of copy cat manufactures.

As a manufacturer myself, I am totally jealous of what they have accomplished. Not just the product, but the culture of the company - a family environment.
