Convergent Design Open Letter to Odyssey7Q Owners

So if I understood.

Now, in European country, if we have already a 7q, we can buy an 7q+ (with 2ssd free), sold our 7q with ssd, keep the raw firmware on both odyssey even if the 7q is not on my name anymore ? The 7q have 1 year more for free, and the 7q+ have 500$ on the webstore of CD ? (I don't found the link, is it not yet online ?)

Thanks, because with the 2 ssd include, it's a really good deal for upgrade.

Not exactly. You need to own both devices at the same time to engage the Loyalty Program.

Own an Odyssey7Q. Don't sell it yet. Buy the Odyssey7Q+ and register it on our website. We will see that you have both and will invite you to participate in the Loyalty Program. Register the two units for the program (each device can only participate in the program once). The original Odyssey7Q will have its warranty extended to Jan. 1, 2017. Whatever Record Options are on the Odyssey7Q AT THAT TIME will be duplicated on the Odyssey7Q+. You will receive a CD website coupon for $500, which you can keep, use or give to someone else. When you purchase the Odyssey7Q+ it will come with two 256G Odyssey SSDs.

Information on the Loyalty Program can be found in the Knowledgeable section of our website.

anyone else successfully upgrade to a 7q+ and sell their 7Q? I can't have been the first, but apparently I was the first to sell it with the $500 coupon since I had to get Amber's help to transfer it over. I can recommend that people doing this process leave a little time since several of the things are not instantaneous or automated yet. I was able to receive my 7q+ at 10am and finish the transaction of selling my 7q by 2pm (in person craigslist sale in NYC) but only by bothering Amber (who was very helpful and surprisingly available) on the phone several times to expedite my loyalty program steps and the $500 coupon transfer.

All in all worth it,. I was annoyed when CD dropped the 7q price months ago but the loyalty program and SSD promotion worked out really well since my 7q sale covered the cost of the 7q+ minus only $100 but I'll end up with 1tb of SSDs and started with 512gb, so I could more than make up the difference by selling 512gb of SSDs. Not bad I bought the 7Q 15 months ago and now end up ahead with an extra 512gb of SSDs and have a nearly brand new 7q+ worth what my 7Q cost when I bought it. Basically cancels my 7q's depreciation of the past 15 months...

Now all I need is a firmware with exFAT, 4k 120fps ProRes LT, 3d LUTs, etc... a guy can dream :)

I have my 7Q sold. B&H Photo screwed up and rather than ship my 7Q+ out Next Day Air (like they were supposed to) they ended up shipping it UPS Ground, so it will arrive on Monday. I already had 2X 512GB hard drives. So, when I sold my 7Q, I gave the new owner the 2 X 256GB hard drives that came with the 7Q+. I am selling the $500.00 CD credit as a separate transaction and had someone contact me today that expressed interest in buying it. In the end, I will upgrade with an out of pocket expense of $50.00.

I agree Amber @ CD has been very helpful in making the transfer process run smoothly. The only thing that I am not sure how they are going to handle is the 1 year warranty extension on the 7Q. When I spoke to Amber on Friday, she did not seem sure as to how they would track that. She seemed to think that it may be a matter of entering a new license key similar to when someone purchases a warranty extension.

Thank you,

Actually we do not plan to ever automate it. There will always be a person at Convergent Design to oversee the process to make sure that nothing gets messed up along the way. It may take a bit longer but it insures that all works out well in the end.

The Loyalty Program offer ends March 31st, 2015.

I understand Convergent design extending 7q customers warrantee further in addition to the other benefits of their loyalty program in order to help us sell our 7q and purchase a 7q+. However offering 2 x 256gb ssd's with the purchase of a 7q+ is making it that much harder for us to sell our 7q units as the 7q+ bundle now seems that much more enticing to new customers. Its a given that this was a business decision in order to increase sales in response to Atomos's offerings, however a better upgrade program must be put in place to satisfy both the business and existing CD customers who wish to upgrade!!

I have to disagree. The free 2 X 256GB hard drives ended up helping sell my 7Q. I gave the 2 free hard drives to the
guy who purchased my 7Q. Those hard drives made it too good of a deal for him to pass up. I can tell you without a doubt you will have no problem selling your 7Q and upgrading to a 7Q+ with very little to no money out of pocket - I did.

You are correct. All Odyssey 7Q warranties are extended until 01/16 when you install the latest firmware. However, I am referring to the additional year of warranty (to Jan 2017) that comes when you participate in the Loyalty program. I think that warranty extension will probably have to occur using a special license key.

when i saw that CD is giving 2 free ssd's with the 7q+ on facebook, my jaw dropped. Next year is gonna be CRAZY with the new sensor pro cameras and recorders!!!

Who says you need to keep the two 256G SSDs? If the assumption in an upgrade is that you wish to end up with the exact same package on your Odyssey7Q+ as you had on your Odyssey7Q, then you now have another $790 value to pass along to someone purchasing your Odyssey7Q. Along with whatever Record Options you have, the extra extended warranty and the $500 webstore credit coupon you can also pass along to the buyer, that's a lot of value. I know of a few people who have told me that they have come out ahead on the deal.

I would totally have bought a brand new 7Q+ if this had been made public knowledge a week sooner and instead I've bought someone's used 7Q which I can use with my FS7 but not on my A7s.

Dammit.

Unfortunately that's the nature of it... I've saved a lot of money buying used gear, but a while back I bought a Zacuto Zwing Away (matte box swing away... which I thought I'd absolutely love, turns out I hardly ever use it) used here on DVXuser. Retail was $400, I paid about $165 or so. I thought "aw yeah, over half off!"... a week or so later, they had a major clearance sale with the Zwing Away marked down to about $90 (brand new!). So I over paid about $75 for a used product. You win some, you lose some.

Also, I was one of those original iPhone early adopters. Got it on day 1. Then, after Apple got $600 a pop from the loyal customers, they dropped the price to $400 two months later. Had there been any indication that would happen (especially when Apple rarely has sales, let alone 33% price drops), I would have waited. Lucky for us, Apple offered gift card credits to those of us who paid full price, which they definitely didn't have to do.

This is a bit of a random question, but i've lost track due to not being on the forum much lately....

Are there plans to record high frame rates in the 4K2HD mode? Like 120fps or even 240fps?

obvious 4KtoHD needs a 4K source, so that will be limited to the 120fps burst mode - currently under development (according to Mitch). But I get what you mean!

If you're talking about high speed 2K raw to 2K Pro res - I believe it's also 'under development' but with no garuantees. Mitch has said they're actively working on 4K 60fps to 4K pro res - which is a big processing ask for the Odyssey. However, if they get that working I think 120fps 2k would be the next step (or possibly 4K burst to 4K pro res) as the processing rate will be roughly equivalent.

I don't think 240fps is on the cards though.

Well they probably wouldn't be 4K2HD, they'd be 2K2HD since the FS700 does those framerates in 2k RAW mode :)

Then again they could do 4K2HD 120fps burst I suppose.

This is essentially correct.
