Convergent Design Open Letter to Odyssey7Q Owners

Sounds like I have to buy a 7q+ and then sell my 7q? Or can I sell my 7q now and still get the loyalty benefits when my 7q+ ships?

New firmware 4.10 works great (2K/4K ProRes), amazing work CD-Guys, hope you'll can spend some time with your families the next weeks.

i can't get any mail reply from CD regarding my 7q hdmi problem. I feel like my 7Q hdmi port is loose. I try different hdmi cable end up only 1 hdmi cable work "a bit better". All Hdmi cable i try with other cheap monitor, it just work perfectly, in connection, never lose signal. But when connect to 7Q, it just show nothing on monitor and show no input. But after i keep trying, it only work when i push the hdmi cable head to one side at the port, but when i let go my hand, it lose signal again. End up only 1 cable with 1 hdmi size adapter(among few adapters) can having better connection, because slightly more tide and less shake on the port than other. But sometime if u shake the cable, it will lose the signal awhile and sometime it also buggy, u need try reconnect few time to make it show on the screen. But all these hdmi cable just work perfectly on other monitor. Anyway i just feel the port very loose compare tp any hdmi port i used before..I wonder did i get a buggy/bad 7Q? Not to mention the low voltage problem as well, it is very serious on my 7Q than some other users. I like 7Q features but these problems really make me feel annoying i cant make it function perfectly. If am i really receiving a bad product, i wonder how do CD settle with this.

A firmware release on a Friday? CD is breaking all the rules

I decided to update to the newest firmware and everything went without a hitch. However, I though I read somewhere that there was also an update to the ProRes Transfer tool to version 1.5? When I check the CD website, it still shows 1.4.4.

Thank you,

So much to do, so little time...

We'll get it up on the site as soon as possible. Probably Monday.

So if I sell my 7Q and buy a 7Q+, I can advertise the 7Q as having an extended warranty until 2017? Or do I have to keep my 7Q to get the super extended warranty?
Once you buy a 7Q+ and apply the Loyalty Program benefits, the 7Q will have an extended warranty until 1/1/17. You can sell it and that warranty will travel with it.

I would also note that another benefit seems to have eluded people here. The $500 webstore credit is in the form of a coupon. That coupon is transferrable, so you can "sell" it to whoever buys your 7Q or to a friend or whatever. There is real value there.

You must be in ownership of a 7Q to take advantage of the Loyalty Program benefits on a 7Q+. You must wait.

Please email me directly so that I can assist you with this matter. If there is a defect with your unit we will make it right.

Why?

If the 7Q unit warranty is in the form of a code... Its just about forwarding that email to the buyer. And have the buyer tell you all the S/N numbers if CD asks.

Or are you sending CD squads to our offices and homes to check for units? :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Because an individual Odyssey7Q is registered to an owner. That owner has an account on our website. If you sell your Odyssey7Q you and the buyer should contact us to transfer ownership. Unlike other companies we will not charge a fee for this. The Loyalty Program is only eligible once per Odyssey7Q, so either you are selling that potential value to the buyer or you are reaping it yourself.

Many people only think of their individual circumstance, but we need to prepare for all sorts of contingencies. We have companies that own dozens of Odyssey7Qs. It can become a logistical nightmare which is why we need to do this serial number to serial number and follow by ownership. Otherwise what's to stop a buyer interested in a fleet of Odyssey7Qs from purchasing them used from current owners and then executing the Loyalty Program benefits on new 7Q+ units before the old owners purchase their own units? If you have no intention of buying a 7Q+, then by all means go ahead and sell whenever you like. But if you wish to reap the rewards of a Loyalty Program, you need to remain "loyal" by owning that original product until you buy the new one. Then the next day you're entirely free to sell it as you wish.

Your explanation is confusing. So I can sell my 7q now and get the loyalty benefits as long as I wait to transfer ownership of the 7q to the buyer until after I receive the 7q+? Or is there some reason I actually have to keep my 7q until after I have the 7q+ in my hands? I may have a buyer but the 7q+ isn't available yet it seems.

My question is, is there an expiration date on the loyalty program? Here's my situation. When I gather the funds, I plan to buy the FS7 and the back. I really won't have much need for the HDMI input. However, at some point in the future, maybe several years from now, I may buy the A7s (or whatever version is currently shipping). Then I might want to sell the 7Q and rebuy the 7Q+. Will the offer still be good?

March 31st 2015. So you have a couple months (which is pretty good, honestly). Several years is a pretty unrealistic expectation for a promotion like this.

First off, the Odyssey7Q+ is shipping and available now. Some clients have already posted pictures on Twitter and Instagrams of their units set up with cameras on shoots. We just started deliveries on Friday, so your dealer may need a day or two to get the FedEx and process it through its inventory system. Geez, it's been ONE DAY!

Second, don't try to cheat the system. If you sell someone else your Odyssey7Q, you legally no longer own it. That means you no longer have the right to reap such benefits. Say that tomorrow you sell the thing. And then on December 26th the new owner attempts to register with us, as is his or her right. Our system will flag the serial number as already being owned and we will reach out to both parties. If we reasonably determine that ownership is now transferred, you will not get to claim the Loyalty Program off of that Odyssey7Q, and in fact the new owner will. Each Odyssey7Q gets to provide that benefit once and then will be locked out by our system.

If you don't own it, you don't own it. You can't be a little pregnant.

Um, no.

You have until March 31, 2015.

Anyone else remember the Chris Elliott show Get A Life? There was an episode where he buys a $12 submarine from the back of an old comic book 20 years later.

I have an ad from the back of an old computer magazine for a 5MB hard drive, only $4995.00 Think I can still collect? How about the 1967 Jaguar E-Type that originally sold for $5500? Think I can still get one at that price today?

Sorry, from what I can tell all retailers I've found still list it as a preorder as opposed to a backorder or in stock, which seems to imply it has not even begun shipping but perhaps the large reseller's websites are wrong and should read "backordered" if some preorders have fulfilled, but I wasn't aware they had. Perhaps I should be more clear and say it didn't "seem to be available for me to buy now", perhaps you know of a reseller who has it in stock now or at least has begun shipping preorders, and if you do, please let me know so I can order from them.

I guess I must be misunderstanding what the loyalty program means, I didn't assume it was gaming the system to sell my 7Q for a 7Q+, but it sounds like CD believes it is? So the loyalty program is really only meant for people who want to own both a 7Q and a 7Q+? Or is it just that CD really cares if 7Q owners wait to sell their 7Qs a day or two later? In either case it does not seem to make sense to me but I may be misunderstanding. Is the purpose of the loyalty system not just to appease 7Q owners and give them a reasonable way to upgrade to the new 7Q+ without opening CD up to the cost and complexity of an upgrade program? I mean the loyalty program is the only way I can get the 4K HDMI solution for my 7Q that you've been talking about for so long without huge additional cost (the additional cost is eased somewhat by the duplicating of my FS RAW upgrade promised by the loyalty program), but you'd hold it against me if I sold it a couple days before receiving my 7Q+ due to the timing of my buyer's needs and lack of availability of 7Q+'s? Why not just let me transfer ownership after I get my 7Q+ and call the couple days I went without my 7Q a trial/rental period for my 7Q buyer? I mean CD probably wouldn't even know and it's a bit hard to imagine why they'd even care. Isn't the loyalty program for me as a CD customer who bought early on and had to endure crazy slow firmware/feature updates, a manufacturer-imposed $500 drop in value, and subsequent obsoleting of my 7Q for a superseding product all in about a year of ownership? Frankly I'm a little afraid it will be hard to find 7Q buyers once the 7Q+ is widely available, so I have reason to want to sell as early as possible.

Also you make it sound like someone could seriously screw up my 7Q registration by claiming they own my 7Q, or that it might be easy for someone to steal my 7Q and register it without my permission or screw up my registration with a fraudulent registration simply because they have my serial number that any renter or person on set has access to. Why wouldn't transfer of ownership and registration be controlled entirely by the current registered owner? The idea that someone other than the current registered owner has any control over who CD thinks owns a 7Q is a scary thought... Even if someone is in possession of a 7Q registered to me, you don't know how they got my 7Q or what kind of arrangement I have with them for rental or leasing or lending of the unit, so is seems that you should not make any assumptions about ownership except for what I as the registered owner say, even if it means someone might be able to "game the system" in a way that has almost no affect on CD.

Please be very clear on exact policies and actual situations since it would really suck to trade up to a 7Q+ only to realize CD wouldn't honor their loyalty program because of some unsaid or unclear stipulation that I did not understand fully. Such a misunderstanding could end up costing a lot of customers $800+.

There is no need to ridicule me. I was just asking a question about your policy. Regarding the March 31 deadline, does that mean that all aspects have to be completed by that time? For example, do I have to have installed the Sony option in my new 7Q+ by that time? (I don't think I can get the extra money and buy one that quickly). And do I have to have used up my credit? What if any portions of the loyalty program continue past March 31? (Sorry if this has already been answered. There has been a lot to read.)

Noah, you appear to be the only person who is having difficulty with this. Simply stated, in order to take advantage of the Loyalty Program, you must have ownership of an Odyssey7Q. If you no longer own one then you cannot take advantage of the program. It is that simple.

If you wish to work out some arrangement with someone who is purchasing your Odyssey7Q from you that's just fine. It's none of our business and we really don't care. But if this arrangement somehow does not work out then we will not be held responsible. Our policy is simple and clear. If you choose to do something outside that policy then that is up to you. You're right that it will likely work out just fine, but if it doesn't then that is on you.

As for changing the registered owner of an Odyssey7Q, we would like to have both parties contact us to confirm the ownership. If there is a dispute somehow then we will attempt to determine the rightful owner but this enters into legal territory for which we cannot be held responsible. Keeping track of such things is really not that complicated a thing, especially as there is a human being on our end who will always oversee the process rather then just let it happen automatically. If it really got ugly then I would say that we would hold back from either party reaping benefits until the dispute was settled, either by the parties directly or by law enforcement.

Honestly, I don't think it will ever come to this. But just to be clear, there is reason for us to handle things this way. While the idea of the program is to benefit 7Q owners, the way we can issue such benefits is via the tracking of individual serial number units. So we have a one-to-one policy for the program, meaning that an individual Odyssey7Q can have a Loyalty Program benefit exerted on it toward a new Odyssey7Q+ just once. We have to keep track of things somehow.
