Controlling the focus ring with a remote switch?

Just wondering if its possible? Plug some type of switch into the remote switch jack on the GH1 and be able to do follow focus without having to touch the focus ring on the Lumix lens and risk shaking or moving the camera on a tripod? I know they make remote follow focus devices but they are expensive and kind of bulky. Isn't there a way to do follow focus with some kind of remote on the GH1? Just curious. Can ya create a patch for that Vitaliy? Hahaha! Just kidding.:cheesy:

filmkid are you familiar with follow focus + whip systems? The whip allows you to pull focus from several feet away without shakiness

If you think about it for a minute, camera body already controls focus motors in compatible lenses electronically. If exact mechanisms become known, in theory it may be possible to tap into those controls and adjust focus externally. There are a lot of unknowns here of course.

Trammel tried to do something like it.
But he used ready and documented PTP function that is too high level.
In reality you need to know bottom and top values and know routine that set focus position to specified value. So cheap follow focus could be made.
I even know how to make cheap communication (USB is not suitable here).

There are not that many autofocus capable lenses out there for MFT, but it may still be a worthwhile endeavor to pursue. Mechanically focusing 20 mm lens works, but feels a bit strange. A functioning electronic follow-focus would be a unique and very useful gadget IMHO. It would be simply irreplaceable for scenarios where mechanical follow-focus system would attract unwanted attention or be too bulky to setup/carry.

Thanks everyone for your input. Especially you Vitaliy. I consider you an honorary celebrity on dvxuser for your magnificent hack on the GH1!

I guess you guys are saying that something like this is possible but, there are many variables involved. Just wishful thinking I guess. Oh well. :undecided

Vitaliy,

If you think you can develop such a system (wireless or wired) please do. I personally would be among first in line to buy it. I know many others would want this too.

Sincerely,
Andre
