Consumer Camcorders (e.g. SD900) with HMC 150

Lots of people raving about the quality of the video coming from consumer cameras such as the HDC-SD900.

It seems to me that being 1/4" sensors must have a major effect on the quality and noise in lower light, yet people still seem to rave.

Is it simply that the people doing all the raving don't have enough experience to know better or are these newer consumer camcorders really now up with the likes of the HMC150, or even better in some case?

I'm not thinking about the pro-features such as XLR input, waveforms etc, but plain image capturing capabilities @ 1080p (even 1080 50/60p!) for additional angles.

Do you have one of these consumer models to compare against the HMC in the real world? What's your thoughts?

They seem ideal for sticking in hard to reach places as unattended cameras.... but something tells me I'd be really disappointed in the output.

In daylight/studio settings, the sharpness beats the pants off the HMC150 (I think it's the same imaging system as the HMC40/80).

And in lower light? e.g. low enough for 6db on the HMC? What about 12db? I'd love to seem to comparisons.... but can't find any worth watching.

Sensitivity in lower light is really not worth comparing. I don't own one of those consumer models, but my HMC40 at 12db gain is probably not as sensitive as my HMC150 at zero gain. However, at up to 18db gain the image is quite usable as long as you've added a bit of on camera lighting. The noise does not look so obviously bad as my 150 at 6db.

I just purchased the SD900, and I am going to do my first amateur and semi-professional video productions with it.
So I'll share you my experiences on it on later date. However, I have no experience with previous cameras so I don't know how my opinion is worth. :)

Anyone who used this camera before, any pro-tips for me?
