Consolidating loss

It's completely lossless. It's essentially a file copy process. The only thing extra it does is create new omf or mxf wrappers around the copied frames of the newly created clips. That's why you have the 'Consolidate' / 'Transcode' option: Transcoding is recompressing.

Correct except for one small exception. If you are transcoding to an uncompressed format such as SD 1:1, then it is a decode and a save since there is no recompression happening at that stage.

thank you - that is what i thought - so you can consolidate over and over to move files around if the need be with no loss - perfect

Also correct. As long as you stay uncompressed. If later on you go back to a compressed format, even the original codec you used, you add recompression artifacts. It's a one way street.

But that's not necessarily a problem. If the original footage is in DV25, you do some CC'ing in Avid, and render to DV25, it's just as good/bad as exporting to uncompressed to something like Combustion for CC, render to uncompressed, and import into Avid at DV25 again.

Here is a nice( old) comparison by Adam Wilt on the impact of recompression within the same codec.
