CINEMATOGRAPHY:

You had some good shots, and good shot selection. I liked how the opening shots of the woman driving the car were nice and steady. I also liked the last shot, which was the overhead zoom out of the woman lying on the sidewalk. The lighting was a little off to me. It seemed as if there were a lot of different color's going on from all the various rooms which seemed a little odd. Also when the guy comes home, its bright out, yet in the house it appears to be pretty dark. It was good to see that you put the effort into lighting your shots as it definitely helped the overall quality, but watch your placement as in some shots you could see the hotspots of where the light was located and sometimes the lighting just didn't feel natural.

EDITING:

Like many of the films I've watched yours had a good simple editing style to it. Your cuts helped to keep the story moving as well and keep up the feel of the story. And without fancy flashy effects it allowed the viewer to become completely into the story which I like.

SOUND:

You did a pretty good job of mixing all the audio together. At times I had difficulty hearing the dialogue which just resulted in my adjusting my speakers louder then I thought. But other then that, the clarity of the dialogue was good and the mix between that, the sound effects and the soundtrack was done well.

SCORE:

Awesome job taking advantage of soundtrack and garage band. To those who have used those programs, its may be surprising to think someone would use those in their film. But to those who haven't worked on with those programs, the soundtrack really matches the film and gives it a good feel that helps bring more emotion to the story.

SCREENPLAY:

You had a good, interesting idea. The beginning was a little confusing with the two phone calls from the different women, and I wasn't exactly sure what leaving the door unlocked had to do with the story. After you showed the woman watching the video tape of the baby, I understood who the two different women were. I liked how you brought us into the backstory by showing the video tape, I thought that was a nice touch. I gotta admit that I was surprised when the guy got hit by the car though.

ACTING:

The opening phone conversation seemed a little awkward and unnatural and then the performance of the woman in the mental institution/hospital seemed a little fake and forced. But other then that, the rest of the acting was quite good and nothing really jumped out at me that seemed odd and unusual.

Overall, this was a good film, with some good work behind it. You've got some good ideas and I think the main thing that just needs some work is your lighting. But other then that, good job.

Hey, I really appreciate all the comments. I have done a re-edit based on feedback and have made an 8 minute short film I am somewhat happy with. Based on everyones comments about the story though this may be a good candidate to do a re-write and re-shoot to make a sweet 15 minute short or so. Could be a fun winter project. Maybe I will use some real actors to instead of my wife and I and whoever happened to come by my house that week.
The shot mis-continuity is because I had no time so me coming home from work was actually in the morning then the shot when I am inside the house was shot late at night days later.
Hopefully I will have a much better film to post one day.
Thanks!
Greg

Just finally getting the time to copy the notes I compiled in a Word doc while watching the shorts:

I hate to be hard on a film, but this one just had me confused nearly the whole time, not having a clue what was going on. The sound mix/design was poor, constantly cutting in & out and with various levels. Score was nearly non-existent to help for flow/emotional build up, etc. Acting of our lead was very wooden & stiff … only part I liked of the acting was at the very end after the woman delivered the child back to the neighbor. Also didn’t make sense to me why they would leave a video tape laying around all these years from that event … he was so concerned about them possibly filming something they shouldn’t, but then with all the cover up he was trying to do, he leaves the camera out on the table, etc.? Not sure if this was a first film or not, but regardless I’m sure you learned a TON from this one to make the next even that much better.
