Cons of Anamorphic Projector Lens?

In all fairness, Roei, he did say that George opted not to shoot Episodes I, II, and III. He said nothing of IV, V, and VI.

sorry, i ignored all the newer ones automatically cause they're pretty much an insult (except for number III last fight) and waste to be filmed in Anamorphic ;)

BTW Empire strikes back is the most great looking, serious and better directed of them all, so i don't really care what Mr Lucas desired (most probably his digital film equipment calculations), the fact is that if Empire wasn't done Anamorphicly, we wouldn't have this great cinematic experience. so anyway, the result is that they DID make a very complicated sci-fi film with anamorphics, and made the experience a lot more magically looking.

back to anamorphics on DSLR:

i feel that trying to mimic film with DSLR will never really succeed anyway,
so IF you have an idea that is suitable for anamorphic shooting,
and IF you have the chance of using decent glass,
and IF you know the compromises of anamorphics,
i'll say go for it.
DSLR will never look like film, so trying to squeeze anamorphic magic into it is a great, sometimes even necessary tool.
(it's all my personal opinion and taste, so...)

Thanks tommygdawg...that is exactly what I was referring to. The more recent versions.

Yep. My taste too. Cheers!

Weren't all the latest Star Wars movies shot on 3chip 2/3" cameras? Not a lot of anamorphic lens options for prism cameras...

Yea, they were shot on 2/3" cameras. Our school (Ball State) has a couple of the same cameras in our live studio setup.

I did some research (ie googling) on it. They were also shot in 1080p, not 4k. WHAT?! It's actually pretty cool when you think about all these people (including myself) that are on about having to have huge sensors, 4k, and anamorphics to get the film look. Lucas didn't.

Right, he used F900 and later the F950 which at the time were the closest thing to digital cinema cameras. Even if there were good anamorphic lens options for 2/3" prism cameras, I imagine anamorphic might have been a real pain for heavy VFX work which those movies certainly had a lot of.

Avatar's live action was also shot in 1080p on a F950 camera head 3d rig. 4K is great, but seems like a lot of movies are still doing 2k/1080p DIs even if they are shot 4k or even 35mm film.

I'm not a fan of the term "film look", and I'm still not sure what people are referring to when they say it, it really does seem to mean something different to everyone.

Too true. It's just you see a lot of people who are like "I NEED A RED TO BE A REAL FILM MAKER!" and really the only advantage to the Red in picture quality (other than 4k) is raw file format. It's just cool to think some films are shooting the same frame size as we are.

Actually, the Star Wars Holiday Special was the first feature-length Star Wars movie shot with a video camera.

Mr. Powell, you will always have my respect and gratitude for your wonderful hack settings work, but you will not be forgiven for making me go there.
