I don't own an HVX but I do use an FS with my DVX. Perhaps these suggestions will aid you:

1. Be sure to insert the FW cable into the FS first (6-pin always comes first, check direction before inserting, and choose the correct slot).
2. Set the FS to recorder. You can now record what the HVX sees if you press record on the FS.
3. Change the HVX to ext control if you wish to control the FS with it.

Did you try reading the manual?

1. Set the camera's Tape/P2 switch to P2
2. In the Recording Setup menu, set the Rec Format P2 to your desired format (PN modes not supported)
3. In the Other Functions menu, set the 1394 Control to Both
4. Set the FS-100 to Tapeless mode.
5. Press Record on the camera.

Also, when you connect the FS100 to the camera, make sure that at least one of them is powered off.
