Connecting to computer basic question

Hello, I have just bought a PAL dvx100a, (my model is actually called a dvx102a). The manual doesn't tell you how to connect to a computer and I don't know if it's ok to have the computer booted up and running when I connect the camera with the firewire cable. Also do I need to shut the computer down before disconnecting the camera/cable? Page 58 of manual says, "Before proceeding to connect or disconnect the IEEE 1394 cable, be absolutely sure to turn off the power of the units that are to be connected using the cable." I don't know if "units" here applies to computers.

Also I was thinking of using an anamorphic adaptor or at least reading more about them. Can anyone give me a link to Barry Green's guide to anamorphic lenses which I've heard about?

Thankyou so much. This is actually my first vid camera and first post...

Re: Connecting to computer basic question

Yes you'll need to have the computer and camera OFF when connecting.

Barry's anamorphic guide is included in his DVX book. I don't know if he is still selling it alone.

Re: Connecting to computer basic question

Thanks so much for the reply Ransom. Once computer and camera are connected should I turn on computer first or camera? And do I have to turn off both before DISCONNECTING as well? I'm glad I read the passage in the manual and asked the question on this forum because for downloading from my still camera you are supposed to have the computer up and running before connecting and I would have done the same for the dvx.

Yes I will probably order Barry's book for more specific guidance on dvx and info on anamorphic.

Re: Connecting to computer basic question

Computer on first then the camera comes after. When you're done editing turn the camera off first then the computer. Even then, it wont seriously damage anything.

Thanks Bluespider. That makes sense. And I have now ordered Barry's book for all the other stuff I don't know!!!
