FS5: Connecting iOS Device to Run Camera?

Has anyone successfully connected their FS5 to Sony's Play Memories app to run the camera? I'm able to connect the camera to the iPad, but then nothing happens. I use this for shooting myself doing gear reviews and such, and it would be nice if it actually worked.

I don't have an FS5, but I have an FS7 and an A7S. I can tell you definitively that the A7S works with PlayMemories and uses one method of communication, and the FS7 does not use PlayMemories, and has a completely different communication protocol. I expect the FS5 uses the FS7 protocol.

Have you tried to use the iPad webbrowser and go to 192.168.1.1 ? You should be able to double check that IP in the FS5 menus. It's not an "app" but the web page should give you the functions you want.

Thanks. I'll take a look at at that later. Thanks. I'm surprised nobody with an FS5 has tried running through the app around here.

The App that you need to run the FS5 wirelessly is called Content Browser Mobile. It is not the same method at all as the FS7. It is totally different.

Thanks Doug! I'll install that and try it out today. It will make doing my 2 camera shoot of myself demonstrating these Aston Microphones much easier! Hey Doug, do you have a projected release date for your FS5 video? Your EX1 video was a great help to me 6 years ago. I anxiously await your FS5 vid.

If all goes well and I stay on schedule, the FS5 training video will be up and running for streaming on Vimeo by the end of next weekend (January 31).
20 chapters, 6 hours. Thanks for asking.

BTW, don't get your hopes up about using the Wi-Fi remote control. :-(

That's a hell of collection of guitars!

Good to know about the training. Hopes dashed about the remote control. I mainly only need that to set an autofocus when I'm away from the camera, and start recording.

I meant what I said. Wireless remote control on the FS5 is NOTHING like the FS7.

Grrr. That annoys me - it means I likely need to do additional coding. Do you have your thoughts on the wifi written up anywhere outside of your training? I guess I'll need to put hands on an FS7 to do an implementation. What's the wifi distance like? Less controls via wifi than the FS7?

Less controls? Yeah, you might say that. Basiially you can start and stop recording.
And if you have a compatible lens, such as the 18-105 kit lens, you might also be able to zoom, focus, and adjust iris. But that is it.
And you can't really use the camera itself while the WiFi connection is running because the viewfinder/LCD is blanked out.

Oh dear lord! Hmm. That's awful. I guess it routes a picture over wifi? Ug. If I get my hands on one I'll see if the code can be managed a different way.

I tested out the CBM app on my FS5, and it works! I can start/Stop recording, zoom, and touch the screen for a focus point. Nothing to change the camera settings, but at least I have the basics. It's what I need to shoot myself doing on-cam stuff in my studio.

It is definitely a bare bones feature, but just enough to keep me from having to set up a mannequin to get focus. Hopefully Sony will continue finishing the camera and it's related apps!
