connecting dvx100b to laptop via firewire port is not recognized

hello all,

So when I connect my dvx100b to my hp elitebook 6930p's firewire port, nothing happens. My laptop does not recognize that I have connected my dvx100b. I made sure that both devices are powered off. I first turned on my laptop then the camcorder...laptop does not acknowledge camcorder. :(

I'm assuming there is an issue with the firewire port on the camcorder. So I went to plan B:

I borrowed my friend's Canon ZRxx camcorder in hopes I can pop in the dv tape used in the dvx100b into his and onto my laptop. I have confirmed my laptop recognizes the Canon camcorder. At this point the tape plays fine on the camcorder. I then proceeded tranferring the video to the laptop using the import function within Windows Live Movie Maker for Windows 7. It appears to transfer but once it has completed and I play it back, the footage goes by so quickly! I think I transferred at least 5 mins and it only seemed to play a couple seconds.

Has anyone run into a similar situation? If so, can someone please advise?? I THINK I recorded the footage using 24p and I wonder if there is some sort of conversion isssue. It did however play fine on the canon camcorder...its when I transfer it that the playback of footage is messed up.

help?!

Is the DVX set to VCR or Camera?

If set to VCR and the laptop still doesn't recognize it, most likely you've blown the firewire port on the DVX.

If thats the case then he might have to purchase some sort of external mini dv player or capture your DVX footage directly onto a hard drive.

If the firewire port on the camera is blown, your best bet is to buy a good little used MiniDV camcorder off Ebay or somewhere similar, and use that as your capture device.

From reading posts on here I've learnt that actually using a little handycam for data transfer is better than using your DVX for playback anyway. It keeps down the hours on the DVX and prevents wear and tear on the heads!
