connect 2 mics?????

Greetings DVX users

Just got my dvx this week. I want to hook up my shotgun and lav.
Any suggestions on settings for this. And will this cancel out the on board mic (which is what I want to do anyway)?

Thanks

Re: connect 2 mics?????

There are two inputs, you can connect two mic's if you choose. There are also two audio channels on the DV tape, and you can have the DVX record audio from the internal mic, or xlr input 1, or xlr input 2.

Re: connect 2 mics?????

I am still a bit confused...
If I plug in a mic to input 1(lav) and a mic into imput 2(shotgun)
Will this make up my 2 channel imput (on the dv tape) and cancel out the on board mic? I know that if I only put a mic on Imput 2 and set the "ch 1 and Ch 2" switches to "imput 2" this will cancel the onboard mic out. So, when using both Imputs with external mics, does the onboard mic stay active on ch 1? Please pardon my question if it seems elementary.

Thanks Again

Re: connect 2 mics?????

No -- Set your CH 1 SELECT to INPUT 1 and your CH 2 SELECT to INPUT 2. That WILL overide your internal mic. Make sure to turn on the phantom power if your mics don't have their own!! oops.

Now -- Each will record to a left or right side of your headphones if you are wearing them. If you only record with one mic and don't like monitoring in one ear only hook it up to input 2 XLR plug and turn both CH selections to INPUT 2.

Hope that helps.

One more Mic Question PLEASE

One more Mic Question PLEASE

Ok, I got it so far...

My Shotgun mic has a battery in it, and so does my lav mic.
I assume this means they are self-powered. If so, do I need to turn off the camera phantom power? If so, where the heck is that function, (phantom off and on that is).

Thanks Barry !
Thanks CaptM !

Re: connect 2 mics?????

If you're mics have batteries in them, then they are self powered. Some mics like the me-66, even if it has a battery in it, and you turn on phantom power (not recommended) the camera phantom will override the battery.

The buttons are located when you open the LCD, it says phantoh 48v, depending where the phantom is plugged you need to put it to "on" if needed, choose whether input 1 or input 2

Re: connect 2 mics?????

Thanks for the info filmelife,

I do have the me-66, I will be sure to turn off the phantom power when using this mic. I really appreciate all the replies on my questions.

Like I said in the first post, Just got this camera 2 days ago. I have been lurking about this site for some weeks now and decided on the DVX (over the xl1s).

Thanks again for your prompt responses

Re: connect 2 mics?????

I have a couple of electret condenser mics (which can use internal batteries for self-power, or external phantom power). The frequency response listed is greater for phantom power than it is for battery power. In other words, you might get slightly better performance out of your mic if it's phantom-powered instead of powered by its own battery. Read your mic's owner's manual to be sure.

Re: connect 2 mics?????

Thanks again Barry!

I will research that.

Re: connect 2 mics?????

How much does an external mic draw on the camera's battery power? Anything substantial?

I have an AT835B mic that I have been using battery powered, but after I read Barry's post I saw that it does get a little better performance (in AT's specs) with phantom.

Re: connect 2 mics?????

The mic draws 0.4 milliamps. Considering a medium battery has 2800 to 3500 milliamp-hours, it looks like the draw from phantom power should be absolutely minimal. Someone who knows electricity better should correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt you'll ever notice any difference in runtime with phantom power running.

Re: connect 2 mics?????

wannabe,

If you have an me66, you will want the phantom power ON, not off. Like Barry said, this will cause it to draw power from the camera as opposed to the internal AA and slightly enhance its performance. With the me66 you can still leave the mic battery switch either in the on or off position, and as long as you set the channel on the camera to phantom power, the mic will draw from that power.

Re: connect 2 mics?????

As Zoomforce pointed out somewhere on these forums and as various pro sound guys told me to do, when you are recording a scene with just one shotgun you might want to select the same input for both channels and set them to a different level, so the lowest might be useful in case of strong peaks.
