confusing panasonic statement about storage

I am confused by this statement direct from the P2 whitepaper

"With P2, a single 4 GB card can store approximately 11 minutes of high-definition 720/24p footage, so a 4 GB card can be thought of as roughly equivalent to a 1,000-ft load of film."

I thought that DVCproHD had a static data rate regardless of lines of resolution - maybe this is wrong.

According to the above statement - if you are recording on and 8GB card at 720/24p you could get 22 minutes of footage - this means only about 25 gigs for an hour.

Since its advantageous to shoot in 720 to have variable frames rates available - this is great news. Way less disk then i expected to need.

But where am i confused?

720p only captures the necessary frames apparently, unlike with the Varicam. At 60p, you'd get considerably less footage per card.

Correct. In 720p it stores only the frames it needs, and each frame is recorded at an identical compression level, whether shooting 4P or 60P. So at 720/60p the data rate is 100 megabits. At 720/30p the data rate is 50 megabits; obviously you can store twice as much data on the card at that rate.

So, getting silly, if you wanted to shoot 720/4p you could get two hours of footage on one 8gb card!

That sounds amazing. Finally breaking away from the legacy of a tape transport really is awsome. The 2:3 pull down always seemed so messy.

I know...it's so exciting. But it's gonna take some time for me to earn the money to buy an HVX200... but when I can afford it I'm going to love it soo much. I think I'm going to buy another DVX100 before I buy an HVX200. Probably get one from someone who's upgrading to the HVX200 for cheap.

I think come January that DVX100 & 100A's are going to be unloaded once this is released. I'm really wanting to get another for second unit stuff.
