Confused. 720 24P, getting the extra frames out

As I understood it, I could record in 720 24P mode and it would record 60fps and I could get the extra frames out if I wanted slow motion. I have tried and tried on FCP and I cannot get it to use the extra frames. I have the DVCPro convert util and it doesn't do it. If I convert from 60 to 24 it speeds it up. The other way, it says it can only modify 60fps.

Am I wrong or just don't know what I am doing?

Shane Ross has a tutorial on this. I can't remember where but google Shane Ross HVX Frame Rate conversion and you should find it. You need OS10.4.4 FCP5.04 and somthing to download from Panasonics web site. Now I'm talking shooting 720/60p converted to 720/24p. That's how you get slo-mo.

I watched his tutorial. It is to convert 720 60P to 720 24P. It doesn't convert clips shot at 720 24P to use the extra frames.

This is the statement from the tutorial

"You have DVCPRO HD footage shot at 60P, meant to be used in your 23.98 (24P) project as slow motion. This is how you'd it so it is as smooth as silk"

I am referring to footage shot at 720 24P. this footage is actually 60P according to Panasonic and the extra frames can be extracted in on a NLE. I cannot get the extra frames. If shot at true 60P, I can, but not at 24P.

I believe the redudant frames when shot at 720 24p are duplicated frames anyway. So I think you are out of luck trying to make it true 60p from a 24p clip.

I was afraid of that. It looks like the correct way is to use 24PN and then select the frame rate in the scene menu list. I can select 60 and it will record it as a slow motion 24P.

I have a lead to a possibility, if someone more knowledgeable than I wants to investigate...

After I read this post, I got curious and shot some footage on 720/24. Then I brought the footage into FCP and converted it from 23.97 to 59.97 via the panasonic frame rate converter in a 60p sequence. Then I thought if I convert it again to 23.97 in a 24p sequence that would do the trick. It was the first time I messed around with the frame rate converter so I could have done something wrong, but it didn't work. Someone else might have a better understanding of frame rate conversion

I don't think that 24p duplicates frames to create 60p. My understanding is that certain frames within the 60p stream are tagged to be removed. You tell the camera that you want to keep 24 of the 60 frames, 36 of the 60 frames are tagged and when you bring it into a 24p timeline the NLE removes the 36 tagged frames. So it seems to me if you remove the tags you get 60p. That's what I got after the first conversion. Then I simply worked with the footage as if it was always 60p footage to no avail.
