Confirm AE lock?

I am testing the 5D and getting the "freeze frame" issue.
I have tried everything- but I can't seem to confirm locking the Exposure.
In live view- movie mode- how do I confirm I have locked the exposure?

I press the * button but I see no on screen indication that I am indeed locked.

Using the Canon 24-105 auto focus off/IS off

Not sure quite what the question is . . . ?

Can you not simply put the camera in Manual mode to shoot ?

Not sure what confirming you have locked the exposure means ?

So in M (full manual mode) there is no need to lock AE even with the Canon auto zoom?
Because I heard that with the Canon L zooms you do not get full manual exposure. (?)

I'm just trying to figure out this "freeze frame/light shift issue and want to make sure all my settings are correct.

Yes, that is right.

No, this is not correct, full manual control is available to all lenses - I could argue that Nikon G lenses will not offer aperture control on the 5D, but even here there are adaptors that allow aperture control - if you can mount the lens on the body successfully you can have full manual control.
