Concert Video

Me and some people are shooting a live concert this Thursday and I just wanted to make a post to see if anyone had any cool ideas for camera shots we can do. Right now it looks like we'll have 3-4 DVX's, possibly one XL2, 2 Sony HDR-FX1's, and a few PD150's, and one consumer cam that we're going to give to a friend of the band in the audience to shoot whatever the hell he wants. We've also got a 12 foot jib and hopefully a dolly. I was just wondering if anyone on here had any ideas for shots we could set up with unmanned cameras that would be pretty cool to use. We've already got a few planned out, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask if anyone had a cool idea on here we could steal...I mean borrow.

Also, if there are any DVX owners in the Indianapolis area that would like to help out, pm me, we're not getting paid for this, just doing it for a demo piece and to submit for a regional emmy, but we'll take the help if you want the experience.

Make sure one guy is always steady and on a tripod- don't move that camera, it will be your lockdown shot when nothing else works. Tap this camera into the sound board and also have a mic on it for backup. Another good thing would be to have the soundboard also give a feed to a minidisc or mp3 player to backup record.

All the other cameras can really do what they want, be creative. Before you start the show, point all the cameras at one guy while recording and have him clap his hands in front of his face for sync. If possible, white balance all cameras on the same card. When I do shows like this, I usually visually communicate with another guy by holding my shot while he is trying to get a different angle. It's really hard to go wrong if you have 8+ cameras recording at the same time....

Oh yeah. Once you all sync, don't ever stop recording. Make sure all your guys know to never stop the camera.

Put one camera in the trusses with the lights for a ultra high angle shot. Straight down on the drums would be cool. Make sure you have a remote for that one and a front tally light. Lipstick cam on the neck of the lead guitar shooting back down the strings. I love to tape concerts!!! Does your 12 ft jib arm have a remote head? If they are going to be using this commercially make sure you have area releases.

We're going to have one camera in the balcony as the wide shot. We don't need to plug in to the board cause we've actually got a portable pro-tools rig. We're doing a 16 track recording. For the sync we're going to have the lead singer take a photo of the crowd and use the flash as a sync point. We're going to have 2 stationary cameras, one wide shot and one that's always a mid shot of the lead singer. Then the jib shot, and a dolly, the other cameras will be roamers.

We have a few extra cameras though that we're going to set up unmanned, that's where we were looking for some cool ideas for shots.

I wish we had a lipstick cam to go down the strings, I love that shot. Unfortunately we do not. The jib does have a remote head.

Really nice job! The abundance of cameras give it a really professional feel and the shaky cameras in spots/rack focus stuff gives it that grungy feel to match the song style. Overall, a very professional looking video!
