Concert Question

I have a question about how you film a concert. Obviuosly you have a bout 3 or 4 camera man, so u can change angles and make it look nice. But when u edit it, how do u cut it to perfection, to the next shott? Won't you have to play with it till u get the perfect cut? like lets say the singer says the word "Love" and he says lo- and u want tot change the angle when he says the last letters ve, would't you have ot play with it till u get the rigt timing? or you use timecode?

Two ways.

1. Sync timecode

2. Have your shooters leave the camera recording at all times (except to change tapes), even when they are walking around/finding a new angle. This way, you take all your tracks, lay them on top of eachother in your timeline, and only have to sync up once. Just like any other music video.

oooo so u say ok filmers, everyone start recording now, give it a minute, and then when u put them on top of eachother (in final cut) they will be perfecltt in sync?

They wont be perfect but you'll only have to sync once for each tape as opposed to syncing everytime a camera stops recording. With some good planning everyone will change tapes at the same time during a downtime or they get changed 1 at a time in succession so its around the same time but you always have 2 cameras worth of coverage in a 3 cam shoot during the tape change. I do two and three cam corporate shoots all the time with HDV and we just do long takes and line them up on the timeline and sync for each "take" and start cutting - works like a charm. Usually the audio is 2 wireless lavs and each goes to different cameras (using fx-1's with no xlrs )

I just shot a concert this weekend. What I did was set my dvc 30 up on tripod in the back of the clup focused on stage and romed around with the dvx. I checked with the band on how long there sets would be, around 45min a set, so I was good on tape. In between sets I would change tapes. A few minutes before they would go on I start rolling tape and use a point and shoot cameras flash with both cameras focused on it and take a picture. I use the flash to sync the videos later. For Audio I used a M-Audio microtrack 24/96 and recorded high quality mp3 out of the sound boards matrix out. So far so good with editing, everything is in sync. Hope this helps.

I did before shoots with 2 cams. 1 static and one roaming around. Did it the hard way synchronizing it in premiere, checking up the audio wave part to make sure they appear same.

I use premiere's multi-cam feature and it appears very good just like a live switcher. I believe other NLEs also has it .....
