Computer Upgrade

I just bought a HVX200 and now plan to upgrade my editing system. I'm still running Xpress Pro 4.0.1 and have had no problems except for an annoying glich in batch recording that has never resolved itself - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

My computer is set up as follows:
Dual Xeon 2.4 GHz
Supermicro X5DA8 motherboard with integrated SCSI
1048MB memory
Dual IBM Ultrastar 10,000RPM disk drives
120 Gig internal storage
750 Gig external storage
Nvidia GeForce FX5600

I know that Avid is not big on SCSI, but they support it in their tech specs if you don't plan to use external SCSI drives - which I don't.

From what I can see, buying the upgrade to Avid 5.7 at 149.95 and a computer memory upgrade to 2Gig or higher should get me into the world of HD - I already have a monitor.

Any thoughts? And is the Avid Xpress Pro v5.7 update for Avid Xpress Pro
v5.6 and earlier users that includes Mac & PC software on DVD, updated manual and third-party software worth $345? It's a physical package, not a download.

Thanks,
RT

Looks about right.

If you intend to use Sorenson Squeeze and your encoding app, then my opinion is yes. Squeeze 4 is and excellent encoding app and is more expensive by itself than the $345 upgrade price.

Thanks. i have Squeeze on my computer already. i don't know if the upgrade would help that much - I've had great luck with my current version. Does the updated Sorneson support HD?

What version of Squeeze do you have? If it's less than 4 then you should spring for it anyway. Version 4 was a quantum leap ahead in quality and usability (but be warned, they changed the entire interface).

Support HD is a bit of a confused mess. You can make HD sized files as Quicktime, MPEG-2, WMV, etc. But with there being so many standards for HD I'm not really sure what you're wanting. Are you trying to author HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray?
