Computer Question

Looking to upgrade from my MBP to a dedicated editing computer. My current specs are

a 2.4GHz intel core 2 duo

3 GB Ram

256mb Nvidia graphic

Think I bought it in 2006 or 2007

I do mostly video editing on FCP, not a ton of graphic or motion work...currently shooting with canon DSLRs and this laptop is just slowing down. So I was going to buy a 27' quad core imac later this week but wanted to know if an older mac pro would work just as well.

something like this?

I don't know enough about how the mac pros have changed over the years so I would appreciate some help. One big benefit for me is having the internal drive bay because external HD's are going to be the end of me :D

Let me know!

If an older Mac pro would be adequate such as the one posted. If not the one posted then what would be some decent specs to have. Or is it just easier for me to go with the 27" iMac?

My only downside with the iMac is it isn't upgradeable so it's not future proof IMO.....also no esata or internal drive bay.....

Anyone else want to weigh in on this....I figure I would need to update the graphics card in that specific one I posted, but aside from tht would I be running faster than I am now?

and that is why I would never get a mac. are you opposed to switching to a pc? you can build a kick-ass system for well under $1k.
slight side track i know, but worth a thought, no?

I have not considered the PC route, but considered getting a "hackintosh" however I am just concerned I would not know what to do should anything go wrong with the hackintosh. I have always worked with a mac (professionaly) and am mainly trained on Final cut, basic training on Avid, but really don't want to switch programs.

I would go with the mac pro, IF its a dual CPU model. If not, don't get it. if it is, that particular model can receive a CPU upgrade, so assuming you can find a matching set of Xeons, it could become a dual quad. as well as everything else being upgradable

I don't know of any all in one PCs that are upgradeable either. An iMac is basically a computer in a monitor.

Yah which is why I would prefer to go the mac pro route, but if an older mac pro is going to not last long and/or end up costing me more in upgrades than an imac I guess I would accept the iMac route
