Computer not recognizing camera

Hey
I ran into a problem today. I captured a whole tape and went to do another one and nothing... the computer wasnt recognizing the camera anymore. I tried restarting the computer, the camera and kept disconnecting the firewire from both ends. Its not just the editing software that is having problems, its the computer itself. I did not make any changes to the computer or camera between tapes..
Anyone got any ideas besides turning off the camera or computer again??
Thanks
Brian

What kind of computer is this? And also what NLE are you using? I had a problem with final cut and quicktime 7 where one day it just stopped recognizing my camera as well. Maybe you're running into the same problem, but i'm sure you can get a lot more help if you answered those questions.

It is a PC and Im using Vegas. Usually when I plug my camera into the computer a little window pops up and asks me what I want to do, either open vegas or do nothing. The window aint popping up no more, so know it aint recognizing it.. Do firewire cables go bad after time?

I tried switching the firewire cable and this didnt help.. I even switched it to another hole in the back with no luck. So I looked a little further and saw another hole near the bottom, I plugged it in there and voila, it works good now. I dont know why it stopped working in the other one...

Moving to a different port can cause the computer to "rediscover" a previously connected device that it now no longer recognizes in the original port. In your case, you may have found a different 1394 controller on your third attempt. I have seen this numerous times. Another fix that often works is to attach a different 1394 device to the port, if this is "discovered" as a new device, then a subsequent reconnection of the original device will often work.
