Compressor Takes Forever

I have a custom setting in compressor that used to work fine. Recently, it takes upward of two hours to export a 5 minute HD Project to H.264 (down-resing from 1920x1080 down to 640x360). This export is being down on a MacBook Pro.

Why does this take so long? Exporting the same project for DVD only takes 3-5 minutes.

Export settings are below:

File Extension: mov
Estimated file size: 2.15 GB/hour of source
Audio Encoder
AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
Video Encoder
Format: QT
Width: 640
Height: 360
Pixel aspect ratio: Square
Crop: None
Padding: None
Frame rate: (100% of source)
Frame Controls On:
Retiming: (Fast) Nearest Frame
Resize Filter: Linear Filter
Deinterlace Filter: Best (Motion Compensated)
Adaptive Details: On
Antialias: 0
Detail Level: 0
Field Output: Same as Source
Codec Type: H.264
Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
Pixel depth: 24
Spatial quality: 75
Min. Spatial quality: 25
Key frame interval: 30
Temporal quality: 50
Min. temporal quality: 25
Average data rate: 5.12 (Mbps)

I think you're biggest problem is with the deinterlacing filter. That thing slows renders down like wicked insane crazy. Try a lower setting. And since your downsizing, you might even get away with no deinterlacing filter at all.

It had no effect. It still compresses about 10% and then the time begins to climb up to an hour+ and it slowly chugs along. Any Other suggestions?

If you are taking HDV to SD, de interlacing and then going to h.264 on a laptop, it will take forever.

DVCProHD is a little faster, but I would consider something the elgato's HD Intel encoder.

Try turning frame controls off completely for a test. Select in / out points for only 1 min of the video. That way you don't have to wait for the whole thing to see any effect, yet still enough to see what happens. And easy to multiply time wise.

h.264 does take much longer then DVD/MPEG2 to begin with. But still should be able to get that down from an hour's time with 5 min clip.

I tried exporting a 20 second clip turn on and off different things and honestly there wasn't much difference. they all took between 6 and 8 minutes.

I tried lowering the data rate from 5k to 3k
not deinterlacing vs deinterlacing
optimizing for streaming vs download

Nothing is speeding this up! What about computer settings or other setting within Compressor?

I also moved the original setting to a different computer and it takes just as long. Am I just doomed for long exports?

I would say that it's just as fast as it's gonna take. But didn't you say that you were getting shorter times on previous videos on this same computer? What has changed in the workflow?

Different master format? Different resolution? Disk drive speed?

What kindof Macbook Pro is it? ( Core 2 2.4? ) Is activity monitor showing full throttle? ( 160- 200% cpu )

Well, you definitely need to max out that RAM if you will be doing FCS work on that thing fairly often. I think that one can max out at 4GB... you would need to double check that.

Type Activity Monitor in spotlight. Or, it's in the "Applications>Utilities" folder.

I find it strange that turning off de-interlacing had no effect. I know it at least doubles - triples render times for me. Unless your footage isn't interlaced to begin with.
