Compressing to specific file size

Hey guys,

I am sure this must be possible but i dont have clue how to do it.

Is there a way to either export from FCP or use another program to compress videos to a specific file size.

For example when you finish an edit and it is 2.3GB to upload it to u tube or to send it it needs to be 2GB and you want to compress it as minimally as possible.

Surely there much be a way that you can stipulate the file size and format and a program will export it to those parameters?

Or am i just being hopeful?!

I am probably being stupid but i cant see where in the settings in compressor you can specify a file size, you can specify a resolution but you dont know how big this will make the file until afterwards and i was hoping to take the guess work out of it all?

I use mpeg streamclip (link). If you are doing this for youtube then you are probably compressing h264 in a .MOV or .MP4 container.
Simply check the Limit Data Rate box and change the drop down menu to Mbps. When you type a number the projected file size appears to the right.

You should open the online manual under the Help menu in Compressor. If you look up bit rates, you can learn how to estimate your final size.

I also use MPEG streamclip and did what you said, it seemed to work fine and told me the file would be 2GB but then when i converted it it came out as much much less under 400MB

Any ideas what i am doing wrong?
