Compressing Footage

very funny, but seriously, i can't find much about compressing video into a smaller file in the search forums. I guess i sort of need an explantation on the topic. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

again ... compressing in to what?

are you talking about for web?
for DVD?
for editing in your NLE
all of these are typically "compressed"

I assume you want smaller files for the web ... if so ...
do you want the best for mac?
the bets for windows?
the best for both?
the highest quality that not absolutely everyone will be able to play (other than DV geeks)
or a slighty larger file or same size with slightly lessre quality that is more likely that everyone will have
what aspect ratio are you shooting in?
what frame rate?

all of the above relate to your question

Codecs
--H.264 for Mac
--Sorenson 3 for windows
(you can compress in either on either platform but you might have to spend extra $ to get the one that's not native to your system)

Some mac people dish out the extra money and get sorenson 3 even though they are on a Mac because it has been around longer so they feel that its more compatibel to teh average user.

People argue over whether they like sorenson 3 or h.264 better Ive seeb great stuff in both but it seems like h.264 makes a smaller file with arguabley better or almost as good as sorenson 3, but I have heard windows people say that they always get bad audio when the encode in h.264.

also if you are shooting in a wide aspect ratio you will actually want to crop off the top and bottom of your video so that no bandwidth / file size is waisted rendering black bars.

Shooting and rendering 24pa also helps reduce file size as there are fewer frames to render vs. 29.97 even though you are getting full frame rate.

as for programs ... Compressor for mac which comes with final cut pro studio suite or using Quictime Conversion within FCP's NLE

I think you can also get Sorenson Squeeze for mac, which should come with Sorenson 3.

You can of course get sorenson squeeze for any windows machine.

As for compressing out of NLE's that run on Windows ... no idea ... but the yshould be able to do it.

jack just gave you a brief idea...heck if you're making files for computer playback your formats could be REAL media and other streaming formats, Quicktime and it's several codec formats, AVI and it's several codec formats. MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, Windows Media and it's several formats and although DV is standard there are a few if not several DV codecs...so you see why i asked "into what?"

Does shooting in 24P Advanced require extra work than 24P does when in post production? i am mainly wondering if i need to know how to do extra editing techniques if i film in 24P Advanced.

And also, is Sorenson probably the most widely used codec in the compression process?? I used Windows (Premiere Pro 2.0) and was wondering what other codecs rival Sorenson for the Windows OS. I am planning on shooting a movie this summer, so the best look/sound are the main priority.

Sorenson 3 is night and day compared to Sorenson and its been around awhile and is recgonized both by Windows Media Player and Quicktime. Sorenson is crap. Soreson 3 is good.

Shooting in 24p Advanced requires no extra work in post.

You just have to know how to capture it correcly, which is a little different for each NLE, and then you want to edit it on a 23.98 fps timeline. Easy peasey. Then just set the parameters for a 24p file to export.

23.98 (24pa) rocks IMHO because you can burn DVD's at true 24 fps ... not 29.97 with telecine (wich is 24p without the A basically) and you can output web files that are a little smaller.

Only reason to shoot 24p as opposed to PA is if your final output is tape.

If you don't mind, would you be so kind as to give me a brief explanation why 24p would be better if the final output was tape?

What about if the final output was film? Just curious.

well in that case only 24pa ten times over
it give you 24 discreet frames EXACTLY like film (23.98)
so filmout
DVD
web
are best at 24pa (if you want film motion)
tape and maybe broadcast is 24p (if you want film motion)

you can do filmmout from 24p, people did it before 240pa, but the pulldown is less ... well ... advanced than 24pA.
