component out questions

regarding the component out feature, it can output a 720P at 60 fps signal right? that's slo mo right? so you can only record slo mo via component out?

if you are able to record a 30 or 24fps signal via component, are there audio synch issues?

It offers 720 60P over component out, but you will need to capture the 60P footage. One way is to buy a Component to SDI converter and capture to computer. You will need a blazing fast RAID setup computer. Others may chime in on suggestions.

Once you have the 720 60P footage, you can drop that on a 24P or 30P timeline in you NLE for slo-mo.

Component you get either 60fps or 48fps. Through firewire you get 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60. You can mix/match whatever your NLE can handle.

As an example, we're shooting 4 network sports productions at 720p/60 component out for two very specific reasons; to take advantage of the ability to capture with clarity and color depth and to selectively employ the NLE to return instant slow motion decisions at edit time. We don't know which areas of the competition runs will be needed at edit time for slow motion replay so we'd be spending double on the shoots recording real time and slow motion and then leaving 90% of the material on the cutting room floor so to speak employing only those areas we need for replay in slow motion and color commentary. For broadcast for us, these are the principle attributes of the camera in an HD-type forum and the reason for either the Wafian solution or an alternative configuration that is compatible with our editing system.

If you look at the numbers for this type of media event to occur, you'll see that for a 9 hour session, about 1 TB is needed to capture 720/60p; 5-600G for capture and 5-600G for safety mirror. That's why Steve rightly recommended a, "blazing fast RAID system". Elsewhere in this forum,. someone posted rather accurate numbers and I'd refer yo to that posting.

Yes, the Wafian device is expensive and we're looking at finding a suitable solution before mid-April that may be lower priced but in the end, it's far less expensive, even at $15k, that the duplicity alternative in a 4-camera shoot.

okay so it sounds like audio won't happen then right? this is video only right?

.

why is it necessary to buy an sdi converter? if you don't mind using three cables instead of just one, wouldn't a purely component set up work just as well?
