Complementary 2nd camera to an HVX200a?

My boss recently mentioned we might be able to purchase a 2nd camera for two shot interview style projects.

I currently shoot on one HVX200A. It's a typical process- I shoot the interview over the shoulder, then turn the camera around and shoot the questions after and edit them together.

The DOF on the HVX is kind of a bummer for interviews- it's hard to get far enough away to fit a person's head and shoulders in at full telephoto. (if only they were 3 inches tall!)

I'd like a camera with a stock shallower DOF if possible- but I'm worried the 'look' of the video from a different camera might be noticeable in the edit.

What do you guys think? Is there a complimentary camera for the HVX to work with that will give me dreamy DOF, or will video from a different source even be noticeable?

Maybe we just buy another HVX and two redrock's.

Anyway, thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Renee,

You didn't mention a budget, so I'll assume that you have a large one. If you want dreamy DOF and a good match to the HVX, then a HPX-500 would fill the bill. Same codec, 2/3" sensors...the real deal. Used ones are becoming available.

Another HVX would be the best match of course, but a HPX170 is a nice economical udgrade from the HVX and is in the same price range with identical sensors and codec.

I think I'm looking at 5k to 10k in budget. Ideally like to fit another lavalier mic in that price also, and something to use as a boom mic.

AF100, and spend a little time matching them up in post. Dreamy DOF, very similar menu items, should be pretty much exactly what you would need, and fits well within your budget.

If you're already recording good audio on the HVX, perhaps try a GH2:

Been successful for me so far; do the wider shot with the GH2 and a 50mm ~f2 lens, and close in with the HVX wide open - gets some decent nearly equivalent background blur. Reverse roles if you prefer a deep wide and the closeup background to be a big pastel mess.

DSLR flexibility, lowlight, and beauty shots with the GH2, vidcam reliability and runaboutness with the HVX... it's a nice pair. - and it all fits in one backpack.

PS... your boss doesn't happen to be called "Camo," does he?

Camo? Haha no. :]

So you're shooting on two separate cameras? Forgive my ignorance, I'm not the biggest camera nerd- I don't know everything that's out there.
You mean the Panasonic GH2 - which looks like an SLR? (this guy: click!)

I guess for me the advantage of buying a Redrock M2 Encore is that I already have a few cannon EOS lenses at my disposal, including a 50mm prime 1.8 . . .

Sorry, thought you may have been somebody I passingly knew...

Anyway, yes, this is for simultaneous 2-camera shoots.
Situation 1: interview subject only, Cam 1 (HVX) grabs CU and audio, Cam 2 (GH2, yes, that one) gets wider, shallow DOF shot.
Situation 2: interviewer, convo style; Cam 1 (GH2) gets shallow DOF beauty shot of interviewee, Cam 2 (HVX) gets slightly wider shot of interviewer over-the-shoulder of interviewee, also records all audio.

The HVX may be a little long in the tooth, but that's not to say it's toothless yet.
