Compatible w/ Sony HDV tapes?

Hey guys,

Quick question. Are Sony's $11 HDV tapes compatible with the HD100?

I've never seen them in conjunction with the camera but would assume they're usable.

But you know just as well as I do that the minute you assume something, you're. dead. wrong.

Thanks!

I'm using Sony's PHDVM-63DM digital master tapes w/ the HD100 and haven't encountered any problems, but I haven't been shooting with the camera for very long. These are the tapes I started with and was told that the best thing you can do is stick with one brand of tape. Who knows if it makes any difference, but I see no compelling reason to switch tapes. I think JVC recommends using their tapes, but why wouldn't they? You'll hear a lot of different opinions on this subject.

Bear in mind that Sony tapes use a special wet lubricant that none of the other major brands utilize. If you're going to use Sony tapes, you need to stick with them forever. If you're going to use tapes from any of the other major brands, then you need to be sure not to ever use Sonys. If you do too much mixing/matching of Sony's wet lube tapes with any of the dry lube tapes from other manufacturers, the lubricant will actually gum up your heads- you'll then run into problems with dropouts, glitches, and eventually have to pay to get the heads professionally cleaned to take care of the problem.
