GH2 Comparing Monitors for a Purchase <$1500

Heartfelt

This is one of those long awaited purchases and for months, I had settled on purchasing a DP6 but it seems there may be other options to consider. My max it $1500 and my goals are good color rendition (not perfect) and as many of these as is possible: peaking, false color, waveform.

  • The DP6 doesn't have waveform but has the highest resolution @ 1280x800. Up until recently, I know this has been one of the premium choices.
  • Ikan has a new D7W that has all of these features and surprisingly the same resolution. But, it is still very new and I haven't heard much about it.
  • All the Marshalls I see have much lower resolution which would seem to affect pulling focus, being not as sharp.

So, I have three questions:
  1. Am I missing a great monitor? What is it?
  2. Which of these is a best purchase?
  3. Am I missing or thinking too highly of feature? Zebra would be cool.

What do you think?

Note to self appointed forum police: Yes, I DID use the search function and read for an hour.

I don't know about the other monitors you mention here but I literally just received my new monitor less than an hour ago. If you are looking for a cheap high resolution monitor then this might tickle your fancy.

It's currently going for around $249 on Amazon.com but know that it's cheaper (around $210 or so) at other sites.

The monitor's image is very sharp. It is @ 1280x800. Though it does have focus peaking assist I find that I don't really need it on. It's my first field monitor so I don't have any other references to compare it to. But the build quaity is pretty decent. With the battery backplate one could use those generic Sony batteries that are available for cheap. It has a 16:9 and a 4:3 mode. So far my only gripe is the 16:9 image seems slightly cropped coming out of my GH-2. However I read recently that they might be providing a firmware update to tackle this and other issues in the near future. Right now though....it's perfect for focusing. It also comes with a sun shade hood. It does have a Canon 5D mode also but i can't comment on that since I don't own a 5D. Overall it's a pretty decent monitor. You can't get this type of resolution without starting somewhere at the $1,000 range.

Thanks for sharing. I saw on the personal view site that some saw the 16*9 image being stretched a bit to 16*10.

Are you seeing any problems?

I have the Lilliput 7" 5DII model with the HDMI in and out. Doesn't have XLR power like the one above, and it runs about $280, but it has nice focus peaking, histogram, and the resolution is really nice.

No, mine does not look stretched. The best way to describe it is if you took the rectangular shape of a 16:9 image and drew a slightly smaller rectangle within that same image. Sort of like a slight windowed look. I just eyeballed my camera's fold out LCD screen as a reference and seen certain things cut off at the edges.

SnazzyFlapper...I was looking at that monitor also. But the resolution of this monitor is what sold me.

I have a hard time thinking these two are comparable to the DP6 and Ikan.

I will likely consider the ones you mention for my personal rig. Thanks for the heads up!
