Hey all,
HMC150 owner here (and loving it). I shoot mostly in natural light and it handles it very well. The compression could be better, and I've been thinking about getting a nano-flash recorder. (Unless cineform ever actually makes theirs.)
But lately I've kind of been falling in love with the Ikonoskop dII.
My needs are as follows. The smaller the better. (An HDSLR is actually appealing to me, if only it had pro controls.) No more than 5 pounds max. An easy workflow would be great. RAW is not that important to me. DOF is not important either. I actually like a very deep DOF. (I might be the only one in the world right now.lol) And it should be able to hold up for theatrical projection.
Just fyi, I'm not deluded; this is not because I expect a theatrical release. I have access to several theaters that will screen my films for private audiences. It's a special arrangement I'm grateful for, and I want to make sure the audience gets a decent picture.
I'm just trying to go over my options. If the Ikonoskop ever actually comes out that'd be great, however, 80mb per second is quite a load to edit and archive. That said, I'd be cool to begin uncompressed and you could move to cineform maybe. (Though it's interesting that despite being uncompressed the preliminary footage has more noise than one might expect. I still love its look, though.)
I'm curious about cams like the 7d. It'll be interesting to see what offerings HDSLRs will have in 2010 or 2011.
I'm not holding my breath for Scarlet, because I really prefer CCD (prefer! I'm not slamming CMOS), so whatever I go with would have to have a nice large low light friendly sensor, AND be cheap enough to justify a move to CMOS for me.
The HMC is great and the panny color is something that I have yet to see entirely replicated by any other offering. I've been using Neatvideo, and it's scary how clean you can get those images with barely any loss in sharpness. Even those nasty low light macroblocks can be cleaned. So that'll be good enough for now. But in the future maybe the nanoflash would be a good idea because I have an image I love right in front of me, but some lighter compression would probably help a lot for the big screen. I've been doing tests 10-bit versus 8-bit, and for my purposes it's not a huge improvement. Better but not huge.
So this is kind of a speculation thread, and if there's no interest, hopefully this will just get buried. Otherwise, I'd love to hear any suggestions or speculation on future options.
I guess beyond just the fun of looking forward to new tech, the opinions that'd help me the most would be regarding compact cameras good enough for the big screen.
Considering the DVX100 got the job done for many features (properly operated), the HMC150 in it's current iteration is probably fine, but it'd be helpful for me to consider alternatives as well.
Thanks and happy shooting!
