Commlite Canon EF to Sony E Mount Adapter - Fixing Flare With Flocking Paper

Hey All,

Just sold my Metabones for the Commlite adapter for my A7s. Read plenty of reviews that said as long as I'm okay with flocking the inside, I should be all set. No adapter is perfect yet, but I'd rather spend $100 and put up with minor quirks of the Commlite, than spend $400 and still put up with the annoying quirks of the Metabones. I've seen posts and images of people flocking the inside of the Metabones Mark III, some even with templates. Has anyone successfully flocked their Commlite? If so, would somebody be willing to post images / templates, or just suggestions on how to this successfully?

Thank you,
Dan

Just ordered 10" x 30" to start of the protostar paper. Does it seem to do a really good job? A lot of people seem to swear by the Edmund Optics paper, but it's just so expensive..

Hey All,

I ran a flare test and tried to keep the testing constant. I have both the Viltrox EF-NEX II and the Commlite EF-NEX adapter for full frame. Out of the box the Commlite has more flaring both top and bottom, while the Viltrox has more side to side. Overall I prefer the Viltrox as it has yet to fail me and works with my Tamron 24-70 which the Commlite does not play well with.

I had read about the flocking solution but being more expensive and time consuming, I checked some astro blogs/forums to see what they recommended for telescopes. Some people had mentioned their use of Black Camo Paint. It is an Ultra-Flat, non reflective paint that can be purchased at a hardware store for $4-$6 a can. I decided to give this a shot and I'm glad I did. I was careful to tape off all the contacts and the parts of the adapter I didn't want sprayed black. Once I made sure of my masking skills, I went and bought a can. I personally used the Krylon Ultra-Flat Black Camo Paint. It is also manufactured by Rust-O-Leum and carries the same Black Camo name. I can't attest the the Rust-O-Leum brand since I only had the Krylon version available.

One tip of advice would be not to overspray the adapter. You only need a thin coating and dont want streaks and build up anywhere. I misted the insides from about a foot and a half away and let it sit for a couple minutes and then repeated, again with a fine mist. Flipped the adapter over and fine misted it from the back this time. I was able to get a thin, even coat, that dried in 15 minutes. I can say it made a huge difference on both. It definitely worked better on the Viltrox than the Commlite but greatly reduced the flare from the Commlite which was already worse than the Viltrox. As you can see in the image below, the Viltrox flare is completely gone both top and bottom, and side to side. The Commlite flare is gone from side to side, and greatly reduced on top and bottom, albeit not as good as the Viltrox.

It's worth a try and will definitely help whether you intend to flock them or not. I would be curious to see how the flocking fares on the Commlite in my setup and see whether there is any benefit. I think the baflles on the Viltrox are more effective once sprayed than the smooth interior of the Commlite when sprayed. So flocking may be better for the Commlite. Either way I'm very pleased with this method and still would choose my Viltrox over my Commlite especially since the flares have been wiped out on the Viltrox (Since it works better with my lenses). If you have any questions feel free to ask.
