Commerical Shoot Advice

OK, ive had my 300 for 2 moths now and have shot in all frame rates, etc. Im still not sure the best settings for shooting TV ads but i have found to shoot mostly at 1080 30p.

I will be shooting a high end ad for a nice steakhouse and will be doing a lot of jib work on this one. I will also be doing some slo-mo shots as well. The end product will be down converted to 720x480 29.97. But I was wondering if I should shoot this in 24p to get the best high end look possible?

I want my jib shots to look smooth and I will also be doing some speed envelopes on the shots. Please advise, this will be my biggest project thus far with my 300.

Thanks,

Take 1

what kind of jib ? how are you monitoring?

if you want smooth, I'd go varicam and get a nice slo-mo...

As stated I own a HPX300 and dont need a Varicam for this job - I am using the EZ fx jib I have owned for 7 years and have it down pretty good, just want my footage the best possible

I agree. Slo-mo is the way to go. With the 300, you can do 720pN overcranked to 60, right? Oh, and I think a shutter of 120 would work the best at this rate.

Other opinions?

Since you're doing 720, I meant using the Varicam (variable
frame rate) settings on your 300 to overcrank it. Gives a
very cool look on jib shots.

OK so will shoot some jib stuff at 720pn 60 -- can i speed it up and slow it down like the i see in other samples of work where it looks like a speed envelope and the motion will be perfect?

Yea exactly .. system mode to 720-59.94P,
set your record format to ACV-I 100/24PN, turn VFR on in the scene file
and romp the frame-rate up to 60fps.

60fps is pretty darn slow .. but .. you can always speed it up in FCP
(or whatever). The bummer is when you didn't shoot overcranked enough.

One thing (just in case you didn't know) .. you don't get audio with VFR ...
but who would want to "h e a r i t v e r y s l o w" :-)

If you want audio when shooting for slowmo, just record straight 720/60p and conform it to whatever timeline you have in post (24 or 30 base).

True .. but in this case, I would imagine the audio's not going to matter ..

The only problem is not being able to view what you've got VFR on camera ..
which I like to do with slo mo stuff...

No, if you know you're going to 30, shoot for 30...if you're doing slow-mo you'd probably shoot in 60, but when you go to edit, go 30. And anything normal speed should be 30...fitting 24 to 30 will never look as good as natively shot 30 because you're always going to get some amount of hitch due to the miss match.

Really the big difference between video motion and film motion isn't the framerate, it's the shutter speed. Do everything with a 180 shutter angle, and you should be golden.
