My brother, evan, and I just finished our first full month as professional writer/director/producers of local tv commercials. our first month of making a living by doing something we enjoy (beats the hell out of Kinko's). we made a total of 8 spots and we love our new job! Here's 2 more. We'll keep putting em up as we have time. love to hear your feedback!

P.S. exciting news: very soon we'll have to start posting these in the HVX section (woo-hoo!).

These look great! Fun and to the point.

I know that I'm opening up a whole can of worms here, but my best friend from 6th grade and I (we're 24 now) have been very seriously considering getting into the business of commercial film...industrial videos, training videos, whatever we need to do. Both of us are just so sick of wasting 40 hours a week at jobs we couldn't possibly care less about or believe in less.

So...in a nutshell...How did you do it!?

we spent 3 years making as many short films as we could while working at kinkos. a third place spot in Sci-Fest encouraged us to enter some real festivals and we got into Boston International. my brother also worked part time at Vermont Stage Company as an actor and stage hand so we got to meet tons of great actors. one of his co-workers got a job as an administrative assistant at an ad agency. its a young agency, only around for a year, that is run by a guy with tons of experience. for the first year they hired outside production companies to produce the TV spots and were getting tired of throwing all that money out into the production community. They made money on media buys and advice but not on video production. so they were looking to bring the production in-house. my brother's friend, the administrative assistant, introduced us. We made one spot on spec and they loved it so they hired us. they pay us an hourly rate and now make a profit on their video production.

So I guess my advice would be find an ad agency that doesn't do their own production. Convince them that they should because it'll make them more money. And convince them that you're good enough to do it.

Nice work, MacB! Sounds like you've got a line on a great future in spots. And, well, anything else you choose to do creatively. I'm sure the agency is happy to have some good-looking (and funny) spots in their portfolio. Here's to continued success.....

Really a cut above your typical "local" spots. (which I'm guilty of producing) Some people live for the film, but i am 100% obsessed with local low-budget advertising.

I really liked your lighting/camera settings on the kitchen in spot #2. I'd be curious to know how you lit the family at the table. Also, a subtle but hilarious bit was when the kid threw the bag of garbage down the steps. That whole last shot was nicely choreographed.

I agree with previous post, you have a great future in this industry. (One month????) I haven't an original idea in my head for script writing, so my hat goes off to you both.

Hahaha! That car actually made me laugh(and I'm all by myself). Inventive and great voice over! Keep up the good work :)

they were nice. it's hard to make a local tv commercial "decently", but you guys did it and did it very well. i can't wait to see more works from you. keep it up.
