Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

Hi all,

This is an ad I shot on the DVX, it was supposed to be part of MoveOn.org's Bush in 30 Seconds contest, but they couldn't take it for "either technical or legal reasons." So we put it up on our own site:

http://www.hyphencreative.com/dubyax.htm

Please check it out and share your thoughts, opinions, etc. Thanks!

Ryan

Hmmm. Won't load.

We're, of course, thankfully *resistant* to political discussion here . . . ::)

hmmm.... many trees to be hugged around here 8)

Re: Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

It won't load? Is it working for anybody?

With plenty of Canadians on this site, I figured my anti-Bush ad would find a happy home. Maybe not?

Re: Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

WHOA . . . way to lump everyone into a category based on flag! :o

Anyway, wouldn't know. We don't really discuss that stuff, and I'm happy not to.

Re: Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

No point in discussing the matteres refered to in your video. Footage looked alright, but, I think you're not going to sway anyone to the "other side" by just that.

Re: Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

Um, yeah I was posting the ad on this site for technical reasons, obviously... it was part of a contest, and it's not like anyone thinks that a 30 second video clip will change anyone.

And the Canadian thing was meant as a joke :D

Re: Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

Now that I've gotten to see it, I agree that it was well-done. What settings did you use? Lighting?

Re: Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

I liked the 2nd interview shot. I find it really really hard to find the perfect exposure when doing similar shots. A dark complexion with a strong back-light like that makes it almost impossible to find the sweetspot where the background has some nice fuzzy stuff showing through (not completely blown out) yet you're also retaining a pleasant exposure for the face.

As much as I love my DVX-- there's only so much leeway on its exposure (or any video camera for that matter) and shots like that can be very trying.

Good work.

Re: Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

Thanks--I was lucky to have the Arri 650 with me, I spotted it down and got just enough light on his face (through 1/4 blue gel).

Now that I watch it, the QT compression is pretty bad, but oh well...

I didn't use (or have) any filters while shooting, but I did use Magic Bullet Movie Looks (the free plugin for Premiere Pro) in conjunction with some selective defocus applied in AE6. I found that the windows looked much better once the blur was applied--the highlights in the back became much softer. Of course, this was with my 100 which has since been sold for a 100A... hopefully the next time I find myself in that situation I'll have some more options (adjust knee, etc.).

Thanks for the comments!

That was really well done, and a great concept for the project. I've seen the other "bush in 30 seconds" ads, and yours is actually above the quality level of a lot of them. Bad break on not getting it accepted, I think you deserved it.

Re: Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

i see why they didn't take it.. the subject matter is kinda stupid.

Um... what's stupid? you mean the "subject matter," as in politics, or you mean the concept, as in a fake drug ad?

You're welcome to your opinion, but they didn't take it for technical (it didn't upload right) or legal (who knows) reasons.

Either way, you can get down on it.

Re: Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

Yea that had an all around professional feel to it. I liked the lightening bolt at the end. Also like the time lapse clouds and how you took the saturation out of them to make them black and white. What editing platform did you use?

Re: Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

I'll be voting for Bush. With that said, I think it was a good ad. It started out amusing, and I was expecting a big laugh or mock out of Bush and was disappointed it turned serious, with no punch line. But then, I'm not familiar with the scope of the contest. Otherwise, nice work. The contest judges missed a good one when they turned your's down.

Even though we may disagree on content (e.g. politics or check out the Pabst thread), I think we should be able to share our work for technical reasons. That's the point of this section, right?

Re: Commercial shot on DVX100 online!

Yeah, that's exactly why I posted the ad--to have some fellow shooters and editors take a look--plus, I'd like SOMEONE to see the ad, since it got rejected from the contest!

Actually we only had a week to do the thing, and I didn't write it--a lot of things got cut, as the guy writing it hadn't written a :30 spot before, and the first cut was over a minute. But he got some valuable experience.

So I don't think it had the impact or punchline we wanted it to, but it was one of the first things I shot on the DVX and I was happy with the look. Edited it in Premiere Pro in regular NTSC and then posted it in AE6. Hurry up Adobe with that 24p plugin!
