commercial protocol

As a potential client I'd pay $1000-$2000 for 30-sec commercial, including script - because that's the rates I'm finding online everywhere. (although in my case I have my own script)

wow. two thousand bucks? doesn't seem like that would even cover catering. maybe you don't mean to shoot it? maybe not shot, just graphics? maybe i'm entirely spoiled.

This depends on your local market. I live in a very small community in WV and the average price for a local spot here is 200 - 500 Bucks. Most of them are given away free with media buys.

My spots for locals start at 10 times that, but that also is just me and no crew.

You have to evaluate your market if you want to make money in the local arena. Everyone wants to make a spots for national companies and spend half a million dollars. YOU WILL NOT COLD CALL COKE, GMC, or any other Fortune 500s with a cool concept and a link to your YouTube page and expect to even get the courtesy of a return phone call.

If you want to play with the big boys get in with a big ad agency. This is the way the game works.

keep in mind that most local spots are done for free by the cable companies and local affiliats. Whil ethis is why production value is so horrible, it's also why production facilities do not make many local spots.

Hey, wow, thanks everyone for the info. I didn't realize that this thread had continued... Man, alot has happened since when I first posted.

Anywho, I am still just about as clueless as they come, with the exception of what everyone has said here of course. I figure, at least I'm having fun making this commercial... it's more of a 30 second art piece that can be used in a wide array of ways rather than targeting a specific product / company.

This is going to be about 95 percent CG and, to step away from modesty, should easily be at the level of a nice piece you would see aired nationally.

So, it looks like I'm going to have this cool 30 second spot that can be effectively used in many ways... but nobody knows my name or that it exists. What do you guys think I should do? Just call some places and tell them I made this thing and I would like them to take a look?

I really don't want to bother with local companies... I'm in a relatively small town/city (Ithaca, NY) and the quality of my piece will be deserving of more $ than the $500-$1000 dollars that is sounds like will most likely be their budget. Maybe I should actually check around and see what their budgets would be though...

Anyways, thanks for the help everyone.

you have a finished spot you wish to sell to people?
UNless I am misunderstanding, what you have made is called a demo. You'll never sell it but can possible use it as an example of your services.

No, it's not finished.... not even close, actually.

I'll never be able to sell it? Really?

Where do you find these postings for people needing ads done? Are there websites that host this sort of thing?
