I was talking to my girlfriend in a coffee shop when I arrived very accidentally into the concept for this story. Coincidentally, X96, which is a local radio station here in Salt Lake City, was gonna be hosting a film festival with a bunch of shorts.
The rules were that you have the line "Don't you know who I am?" (which is one of the hosts' catch phrase at the end of every morning show), a radio had to be handled by a main character and the film had to be no longer than 5 minutes including credits.
So when I said to my girlfriend back in the coffee shop that "nobody would recognize Jesus... He's been portrayed as a pale white guy with blue eyes, and given the current political climate, if Jesus DID actually return, they'd try to crucify him", we looked at each other and knew it was the right short for the festival.
The film played last night to an audience that roared at all the jokes I had in there and then some of them I didn't really think were that funny. The judges loved it for the most part. One of them really had it in for me. Don't forget, I'm making fun of Christians, and somewhat more specifically, MORMONS, in UTAH... So I did expect some resistance.
We were nominated and won for Best Actor and Best Drama (for Drama was very unexpected). We were also nominated for Best Comedy and Best Picture and narrowly lost both.
Without the benefit of infectious laughter in an auditorium filled with people, I'd love to know what you guys think. What worked, what didn't, etc.
Thanks for your time!

And here's the short film:
Camera: Canon 1D MkIV (bare) & a couple L lenses (mostly the 24-70 2.8L and some shots with the 70-200 2.8L IS)
Music: Cubase Studio 5 & Vienna Symphonic Library
Cast and crew in the credits.
